Dom is asking listeners from all over the Delaware Valley to show their support for police officers who are increasingly under fire from armed criminals on our streets. Show your support by wearing blue, or decorate your car, home, or place of business with blue ribbons or blue lights, encouraging everyone you know to do the same and show support for police officers throughout the region. The Big Talker 1210 urges you to show additional support for officers by wearing blue, or decorate your car, home, or place of business with blue ribbons or blue lights, encouraging everyone you know to do the same and show support for police officers throughout the region on “Blue Thursday.” The Big Talker 1210’s Dom Giordano will host a special live broadcast from Geno’s Steaks from 6 PM to 12 Midnight on Thursday, March 5th. Dom and an array of special guests will discuss and analyze the reasons for the recent rash of police killings in Philadelphia and ways to reduce gun violence and make our streets safer. “Blue Thursday” coincides with next Joey Vento’s Geno’s Steaks fund raiser for the families of fallen Philadelphia Police Officers. The Arts in Frankford

There was a time, in the not so distant past, when you could find music, art, dance and other programs at your child’s school.  That is no longer necessarily true given the tight budget some schools are working under.
So if you were at St. Mark’s (4442 Frankford Ave.) last Monday night with me you would have found parents and children filling the gap.  The Philadelphia Community Arts Network (PCAN) offers a program each Monday night.  Upstairs pcan3

you would find a dozen young dancers going through their paces. Down in the chapel a young pianist takes his lesson.

In the meeting room, (picture) some budding cartoonists are getting the basics.

They were all having a great time as their parents waited on the sidelines.  You really have to give these parents credit for taking the time to get involved this way for their kids on a chilly winter night in February.

For more information about this program call 215-482-4860.

A few weeks ago it was so warm I retraced my walk to high school from Penn and Harrison to North Catholic at Torresdale and Hunting Park.

Neighbor Beaten to Death is Frankford’s First Homocide of ’09

According to the PPD’s crime map, there have been seven homicides in Northeast Philadelphia so far in 2009.  Not one of them has been in Frankford.  This time last year we already had four.  And that’s been something to write home about.  But the tenth is probably ours because as of now I can hear the helicopters circling overhead because some moron beat his neighbor to death and has barracaded himself inside a house.  So says CBS3.

Update: NBC 10 says it happened on the 1300 block of Anchor, and calls that Oxford Circle.  So does Fox 29.  And as much as I’d like to give this one up to OC, Anchor Street is south of Cheltenham Ave and is definitely in Frankford.

Update: Michael Boccinfusso has been charged with murdering  his neighbor Dallas “Chief” Custalow.
