Kyle Dunleavy’s Steel Drums
I haven’t actually been able to catch up with Kyle Dunleavy but I knew he existed because the Carters and Jason Roberts have workshops next to him. And I couldn’t post about him because I didn’t have a picture, and I never post without pictures. So it was a nice find when I came across an article on Philly.com by Diane Mastrull talking about new uses for industrial sites and Kyle shows up in one of the photos. So I’ve appropriated it. The Carters said you could tell how close he was to finishing the drums because the noises that came from his shop would get more and more musical. He makes steel drums! That is so neat. It’s a shame they run to three grand or I’d take them up.

Overington House Tenth Anniversary Celebration
Our Friend, Lynda DeSouza reports on the celebration held at the Quaker City Yacht club Saturday night.
Friends, neighbors, volunteers, and local political people turned out to wish Overington House a happy birthday. Food, beverages and fellowship were enjoyed by all and funds were raised to help sustain the work of Overington House.
A Shout Out to Parents: Is Your Child in School? Do You Know How They’re Doing?
I’ve mentioned in an earlier post that I am a retired teacher. I am still an active mother although my son is now grown. If children aren’t in school, they can’t learn. If they can’t learn, there is not much the future holds for them. Figures show that at least 20% of school-age eligible children never show up to learn! (We are not talking about legitimate absences accompanied by a parental note to explain a child’s illness or family emergency. We are talking about choosing not to go to school.) I can’t help but wonder where the parents are, are they aware of this? Who is asking about a child’s day? Frankford High School is hosting a workshop on Thursday, October 29th, with a choice of convenient meeting times – either 10:00 AM or 6:30 PM. The school wants to address this issue by explaining the process that begins if your child has unexcused absences. But no one wants it to come to that. Patricia O. Green, the Parent and Community Ombudsman, wants to do more by offering parents resources to help and improve their child’s grades. Our schools want your child to succeed. But you need to make the time – isn’t your child and their future worth that? Please plan to attend – I know I will and I hope to see you there!
Overington Park Fall Festival
This report is from our friend Diane Kunze:
Thanks so much for hanging in there through our rain delays and coming out to support our Friends of Overington Park group this past Sunday, October 25, 2009. I’m sorry the event didn’t play out as we had hoped due to two rain delays, but those that came made the day worth while. The pumpkin patch for the little kids was a big success thanks to the enthusiasm of the ROTC kids from Frankford High School. They are a great group of young men and women who came out and made the park a better place with their hard work. We gave away 50 pumpkins and 10 bags of candy. They planted, along with the Frankford Garden Club, over 200 flower bulbs and several mums. This spring when the flower bulbs come up and are making the park a more beautiful place for all to enjoy, we will have these groups to thank for the lovely show.
