Sam the Owner of Sugar and Spice

I was trolling the Frankford CDC’s YouTube page this week and found this interview with Sam who owns Sugar and Spice at Foulkrod Street and Frankford Avenue.  Sam is not responsible for the folks who sells drugs on that corner.  He has been very active in trying to get it cleaned up.

EPIC Stakeholders Meeting 2/23/2012

The EPIC Stakeholders meeting on the 23rd was once again packed with a large crowd.  The presentation by Chris Rhametulla of Pathways, PA on “Understanding your credit report” was informative to even those of us who thought we did understand our credit report.  He spent a lot of time answering specific questions from the audience.

Other speakers at the meeting were a State Trooper (sorry I missed your name) who was making it known that the Pennsylvania State Police are actively recruiting minority applicants.  Jim Stanton of American Paradigm Schools talked about their educational system and a proposal to take over Harding Middle School.  Netanel Portier talked about the Mural Arts program in Frankford.  Julie Slavet of the Tookany/Tacony – Frankford Watershed Partnership Inc. and Mike Verla of Rebuilding Philadelphia Together talked about their upcoming events.  Anbrose Liu of Arts Rising talked about the dedication of the Beautify Harding banners.

The next EPIC Stakeholders meeting will be held on March 29th at Aria Health.

Frankford FAFSA Event – What a Success!

The Frankford CDC is more grateful each and every day to house a new computer lab, open and free to the public. And this past Sunday, we were thrilled to host, along with our friends at PhillyRising and the Mayor’s Office of Education as well as State Representative Tony Payton, a free college financial aid and tax preparation event. We had experts on hand to take students and their parents through the process of filling out the federal college financial aid forms, funding that is so critical for so many young folks. And we were also able to help several Frankford residents file their tax returns for the year.

We are in the process of scheduling other programming for the computer lab – so stay tuned for information about upcoming workshops. Possible topics include online job searches, basic computer skills, and social networking for businesses.

And enjoy the pictures below from this past Sunday! Thanks to all who made it such a success!
