Mayor Nutter’s VIPs Outstanding Teachers

From Shane Doud, Executive Assistant, Mayor’s Office of Education:

When we started this search our office was overwhelmed with the number of deserving and dedicated teachers across our city. This has inspired us to look to continue and possibly expand the event heading into the fall (more information to come over the summer). We have chosen 4 great teachers to represent our city’s diverse educational background.

The winning teachers are…

Wilma StephensonFrankford High School– Culinary Arts (Six of her students thanks to her leadership and guidance were recently awarded $336,000.00 in scholarship money!)

Jim O’Brien- Saint Joseph’s Preparatory School– English ( Mr. O’Brien has been teaching for 43 years and still finds time to run clubs and other school programs)

Jennie Prochorenko Stadelberger- New Foundations Charter School– Special Education ( Ms P.S. is excellent communicator with parents, has helped guide and mold some fantastic students and has dedicated her time to produce a student yearbook when it appeared one wouldn’t be produced.)

Richard Leek- Girard College- History, Government and World Religions (Mr. Leek has been teaching for over 27 years, and coaching swimming, track and field & cross country for most of that time. Our office was informed that several of Mr. Leek’s students have returned to the classroom and have become teachers themselves citing Mr. Leek as their inspiration.)

Go Frankford High School!

Better Know a Business: Neil’s Furniture

Frankford has a wonderful history of family run businesses, passed down over the decades from parents to children. Neil’s Furniture, located at 4831 Frankford Avenue, continues that tradition.

Rebecca Goldberg has been working in Neil’s, her father’s shop, for ten years, and took over the business when her father passed away in 2010. The way she runs the store is a true tribute to her father – her focus on customer service and the creation of a community space would make her father proud.

Neil Goldberg came from a long line of furniture salesmen. His father and uncles owned a furniture store in Kensington, and his grandfather delivered pieces on horse and buggy. Neil opened his own shop on Paul Street here in Frankford in 1979, and about five years later moved to their current location on the Ave. He loved being a part of the Frankford community, and his clients became his friends, stopping by the shop at 4:00pm for “Heineken Hour”. He never advertised – a testament to him as a person and the quality of his work. He remembered everything about his customers, from their kids names to the types of furniture they bought.

Since taking over the reins for her father, Rebecca’s learned a lot about running a small business and how difficult – as well as fun and rewarding – it can be. Most importantly, she’s developed a passion for furniture she didn’t know she had. She started out her career working with animals, but has since developed a true love for interior design and a quality piece. She’s taking interior design courses, and in the years to come hopes to incorporate that new element in to the business. And, like her father, the people are her favorite part of working in Frankford.

Rebecca and her partner in crime, Chuck, are here for the long haul. They’re open from 10:00a to 6:00p Monday through Saturday, and offer flexible lifetime lay-aways as well as carpet installation. So stop on by and take the time to chat with Rebecca and Chuck – and ask them about Neil.

Pennsylvania Horticultural Society Garden Tenders Work Day

Yes, this Thursday (May31st) from 5:30 to 8:30pm, Sally McCabe and her PHS Garden Tenders will be meeting on Overington Street (the block between Penn St and Leiper St, one block from the Library), where they will assist classmates and Frankford Garden Club members to fix up a new Garden on the block.
What needs to be done?  Clean weeds from the patio area, clean out trash from a back ivy-covered corner, cut down several young mulberry saplings, cut back vines, put up some string or wire for wisteria to grow on, break or cut up a huge but very decayed tree trunk, and if there is time, dig a new flower bed
What do we need?  Shovels, trash bags, brown paper bags, loppers, rakes.
The Frankford Garden Club will supply gloves, hand pruners, tree saw, a garden claw, any plants or seeds you have extra.
This is a potluck affair, so please bring a snack or drink to share! The Garden Club will provide paper goods.

 Hope to see you there!
