  • RECLAIM | Dumpster Divers –  Sat, May 10, 12pm – 5pm, @ the corner of Frankford Avenue and Paul Street – Philadelphia’s Dumpster Divers are well known for their commitment to making art from what others would perceive as junk. Seeing the possibilities in trash and other under-utilized resources, they bring a new awareness to the concept of “upcycling” as they transform discarded materials into creative new art forms.

  • Art Workshop – INTRODUCTION TO COLLAGE – Sat, May 17, 10am – 12pm, Tookany/Tacony – Frankford Watershed Partnership at the Globe Dye Works, 4500 Worth Street – Learn to create your own collages from photos, magazine images, different kinds of paper and all sorts of printed materials. Adults will benefit by learning a brief history of collage and copyright considerations of digital compositing. Everyone will learn how to cut, tear, and arrange images to make strong compositions using different kinds of glues and adhesives. Come with photos and magazines and leave with your own artwork! Workshop Leader: Dan Enright Tools and materials provided by instructor: glue, some exacto knives & cutting boards (for adults), magazines, found paper, printouts Open to: All ages, maximum of 12 participants Participants should bring: scissors, papers, magazines, photos, other printed materials TO REGISTER FOR THE WORKSHOPS, contact Leslie Kaufman at lesliekaufman@verizon.net.   • Factory on Focus – Philadelphia Museum of Art – Wednesday, May 21, 2014, Philadelphia Museum of Art, Benjamin Franklin Parkway – Philadelphia Museum of Art will focus on the craft of Philadelphia Wooden Boat Factory’s teenage Apprentices. Engage with apprentices in interactive boatbuilding activities. Talk with Factory One Design architect Antonio Dias and hear his thoughts on how boats inspire. See one of the completed Factory One Designs in the Grand Stair Hall, and seek out the Thomas Eakins painting featuring the direct descendant to our very own boat. Open to STAMP Pass students beginning at 3:30pm. Evening activities begin with a short program at 5:30pm.

  • Art Workshop – MAKING SOMETHING OUT OF NOTHING – Sat, May 24, 10am – 1pm, Tookany/Tacony – Frankford Watershed Partnership at the Globe Dye Works, 4500 Worth Street – Experience the fun of turning ordinary trash into treasure. In this workshop participants will learn new ways of seeing and creating art using discarded materials from everyday use. Things normally thrown away or ignored take on new meanings as they become elements of artistic compositions. You don’t have to have any art background to create this fun and rewarding project. Parents are encouraged to come with their children and work together. There will be a refreshments break midway through the workshop. Workshop Leader: Joel Spivak Tools and materials provided by instructor: 2′ square sheets of cardboard and glue Open to: Children and parents (one parent per child) maximum of 10 participants Participants should bring: scissors, “junk drawer stuff”, ie: string, bottle caps, buttons, clean items from your trash.   • REDISCOVER | Photography – Sat, May 24, 12pm – 5pm, @ the corner of Frankford Avenue and Paul Street | MFL to Margaret-Orthodox – Seven local photographers will use their cameras to explore Philadelphia’s urban terrain, concentrating on less visited locations and new perspectives of familiar imagery. Using personal viewpoints, they draw attention to small moments, ambiguous settings, and underlying beauty that might be overlooked by the casual viewer.
  • HIV and Hepatitis C Testing – Sun, May 25, 11am – 4pm,  St. Mark’s Church, 4442 Frankford Avenue – Philly Faith in Action was brings the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine and Drexel University with their mobile medical center to St Marks for rapid HIV and hepatitis C testing, counseling and follow up care.
