Brown Fields Meeting

This may not sound like an inviting topic but it is tied to the redevelopment of the Frankford Creek Greenway.  The only property we have on the list is Edgewater Dyeing and Finishing which is at the foot of Frankford Avenue right at Torresdale.  Its that big shell of a building on the right as you go South.  Announcement follows:

City Planning Commission to Sponsor Brownfields Meeting on September 23rd

The Philadelphia City Planning Commission (PCPC) invites you to a community meeting on the evening of Tuesday, September 23rd as part of a project to promote the beneficial reuse of brownfield sites in Bridesburg and areas near the Frankford Creek in Frankford, Juniata Park, and Port Richmond. The meeting will be held from 6:30pm to 8:00pm at Edgemont Caterers, 4311 Edgemont Street, in Bridesburg.

The project is formally called the Lower Frankford Creek Watershed Brownfields Area-Wide Plan. Funding for the project has been provided to the City through a grant from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). The project web site is www.frankfordcreekbrownfields.com

The Planning Commission began working on the Area-Wide Plan this spring with a team of consultants, public agencies and community representatives, including the offices of City Council members Henon, Quiñones-Sánchez, and Squilla. The meeting on September 23rd will feature a brief presentation highlighting preliminary findings about the area’s existing conditions. The public will then be invited to break out into groups to share ideas about community assets, challenges, and potential development.

The EPA defines brownfields as land whose reuse may be complicated by the presence or potential presence of a hazardous substance, pollutant, or contaminant. The Planning Commission expects the Area-Wide Plan to complement other, ongoing initiatives in the area and to provide an implementable, sustainable approach for the redevelopment of key brownfield sites. This fall, the Planning Commission will also begin a more comprehensive district plan for the larger River Wards area of Fishtown, Kensington, Port Richmond, and Bridesburg as part of PCPC’s Philadelphia2035 integrated planning and zoning process. The Philadelphia2035 web site is www.phila2035.org .
