PennDot to Begin Reconstruction of I95 Betsy Ross Bridge Ramps

Nighttime Restrictions Next Week on I-95 and Aramingo Avenue in Philadelphia

The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) will start construction Monday (March 23) on a $160.2 million project to rebuild ramps and improve connections at the interchange of Interstate 95, Betsy Ross Bridge and Aramingo Avenue in Philadelphia.

PennDOT’s contractor will work through fall 2017 to rebuild most of the existing ramps at the interchange, and to build missing ramps to provide a direct connection between the Betsy Ross Bridge and Aramingo Avenue.

This contract is the first of three to move to construction for PennDOT’s program to improve the interchange, and to widen and reconstruct I-95 and its bridges between Wheatsheaf Lane and Margaret Street.

On Tuesday through Friday (March 24-27) from 9:00 PM to 5:00 AM, lane closures will be in place on I-95 north between the Betsy Ross/Aramingo Avenue Interchange (Exit 26) and the Bridge Street (Exit 27) Interchange as crews shift the northbound lanes toward the median and install concrete barriers along the outside shoulder. Crews will then rebuild the outside shoulder so it can carry vehicular traffic in the next stage of construction.

Lane closures are scheduled on northbound Aramingo Avenue between Wheatsheaf Lane and Church Street from 9:00 PM Monday (March 23) to 5:00 AM Tuesday (March 24) for the installation of concrete barriers and the painting of traffic lines to shift the two northbound travel lanes to the center of the street. Aramingo Avenue will continue to have two lanes in each direction in this new construction pattern.

A bicycle detour will be instituted on Aramingo Avenue between Castor Avenue and Orthodox Street on March 23 due to the closure of the shoulders between Wheatsheaf Lane and Church Street. Detour signs will direct bicyclists around the construction area.

On Monday, Tuesday and Thursday (March 23, 24, 26) from 9:00 PM to 5:00 AM, traffic shifts will occur on the Aramingo Avenue ramp to I-95 north and south for the installation of concrete barriers. The ramp will remain open during this operation.

On Tuesday through Friday (March 24-27) from 9:00 PM to 5:00 AM, crews will install concrete barriers on the southbound I-95 collector-distributor lane immediately south of the Betsy Ross/Aramingo Avenue off-ramp to implement a traffic pattern shift. The single lane that leads to I-95 south will remain open during this overnight operation but traffic stoppages may occur.

The work schedules are weather dependent.
