I have been wanting to get some information on real estate sales in Frankford for quite a while now.  Working through City Hall to get what should be public information is a joke. Northeast News Gleaner is shuttered

From the Daily News today”

Without so much as a word of warning to their readers or employees, the Journal Register Co. on Thursday closed three longtime community newspapers in Philadelphia.

Staffers of the Olney Times, News Gleaner and Northeast Breeze were told all three weekly publications were going to be shut down immediately during an impromptu morning meeting, said Stuart London, the News Gleaner‘s sports editor.

Pigeons prefer pizza

I am not a “birdwatcher” but I do watch birds now and then at the bird feeder out on the back deck.  I see a sparrows and cardinals and a blue jay sometimes.  Every day the doves come over and walk around on the deck and wait for the smaller birds to spill seed from the feeder down so they can pick it up.  Those doves were just not made for hanging on the side of the feeder but they know if they are patient something will fall their way.

Pigeons look a lot like doves and you would think they might share some of the same feeding habits but I have never had a pigeon stop by the deck for a handout.  They seem to prefer Frankford Avenue and Leandro’s pizza when they can get it.

At one time the avenue was probably a better place for them but now it is cleaned up quite a bit and very rarely do you see a scene like this.  Might force the pigeons to join the doves on my deck.

Frankford closings

I was walking down the Avenue last week and saw the big “store closing” signs in the window of American Pants. Then heard at the Frankford Civic meeting that the Salvation Army is closing their facility and merging with another branch. Both are long term fixtures on the Avenue.

Frankford Health splitting from Jefferson system

From the Philadelphia Business Journal:

Frankford Health Care System and the Jefferson Health System signed a realignment agreement Thursday under which Frankford will remain “closely affiliated” with Jefferson, but will no longer be part of the system.

Based in Northeast Philadelphia, Frankford operates hospitals in the Frankford and Torresdale sections of the city along with a Bucks County hospital in Falls Township. Frankford is exploring building a replacement hospital for its Bucks County medical center in Lower Makefield.

The two organizations in a joint statement said, “The decision to realign came after thorough reviews by both organizations, which resulted in the determination that the [Frankford and Jefferson health systems] could best serve their respective communities as independent organizations which maintain substantial business and clinical ties. The realignment will have no effect on the services provided by Frankford Health Care System to its patients.”

The realignment requires regulatory approval and is not expected to become effective before the end of 2008.

The Philadelphia-based Albert Einstein Healthcare Network dropped out of the Jefferson Health System Sept. 30.

The remaining members of the Jefferson Health System are Main Line Health, Thomas Jefferson University Hospitals and Magee Rehabilitation Hospital.
