Love Your Park Day in Overington Park a Big Success

We raised money for park events by selling donated perennials plants from Frankford gardeners. Sending out the greening wave through the neighborhood. The benefits should be coming up in gardens around Frankford for years to come. We planted donated annuals from PHS in beds around the park. Tropical Cannas bulbs were planted (the big red ones) in beds with sunflower seeds.

As summer moves on the giants will emerge out of our flower beds. Frankford Garden Club members, Frankford High JR ROTC, FOOP (Friends of Overington Park) members, families and neighbors came out to help sell plants and plant park flower beds. The beauty of all this hard work can be seen in the flower beds and the fellowship of a community pulling together for the good of everyone. Thanks to all who came out to to lend a hand in one way or another. Your caring and help are what makes Overington Park a special place for all to share and enjoy!

Don’t forget our next event on June 9th from 11 to 3. Our Second Annual Frankford Greening Meet and Greet. All who plant and grow in Frankford are invited to join us for live music, a salsa dip contest, pot luck picnic, and sharing our Frankford greening success stories! First meeting of the Northwood Town Watch

Northwood Town Watch First Meeting

A weekend distribution of fliers throughout Northwood brought about 30 people to the initial organizational meeting of the Northwood Town Watch at St. James Lutheran Church at 6PM prior to the regular Civic meeting. An hour was spent on discussion of the role of the Town Watch, discussion of the proposed bylaws and election of temporary officers. A second organizational meeting is scheduled for Saturday, May 19th at 9 AM at the Knights of Columbus at 5323 Oxford Avenue. Anyone who is interested in participating in Town Watch in any capacity is encouraged to attend. Future Town Watch meeting will precede the Northwood Civic Association meetings.

At the Northwood Civic Association meeting,

the minutes of the last meeting were read. A verbal treasurers reports was made. A member questioned whether the new Treasurer has audited the previous Treasurer’s records. No audit has been done and the member asked that future reports be printed and made public. The Treasurer said that she would take that under advisement to the Board.

Members approved a motion to fund start up costs of the newly formed Town Watch with $300 to cover the cost of printing fliers, etc. Members questioned if the Town Watch will be funded in the future. Vice President Bennett said that the Town Watch would fund itself. This expenditure is to help get it off the ground.

A new member spoke about vandalism in the area of Kenwyn and Horrocks. Young people are breaking windows. A discussion followed about what is the most effective way to report this type of issue to the police. Some recommend making it a roll call item and others say the best thing to do is to attend a PSA meeting and talk to the Lt. directly. Town Watch members were present and will follow up on this issue.

Committees were formed to deal with Vacant Properties, Deed Restriction Issues and Zoning. Volunteers for the committees met after the meeting to provide contact information to communicate at a later time.

James Clay, Democratic party candidate for State Representative in the 179th district spoke to the membership and answered questions.

The next meeting of the Northwood Civic Association is scheduled for June 19 at 7 PM at St. James Lutheran Church.

Love your park day

Saturday was a beautiful day and I was out to see what what was happening down at the library for the Frankford Garden Club before Mother’s day plant sale. Pictures are included in the slideshow below. I also stopped over at Wilmot Park and then tracked down the folks working on the pocket park at Meadow and Tackawanna. What a great day.

Circle of Honor Re-dedication

Description – There will be a re-dedication ceremony for 33 newly installed Federal military gravestones for the Union veterans buried in the “Circle of Honor” surrounding the monument. This is the culmination of phase 1 with the repair, cleaning, sealing, and preservation of the monument itself designated as phase 2.

Frankford Nature Walk

There will be a nature walk on Monday May 14th at Cedar Hill Cemetery.

Dr. David Hewitt will be leading the walk. He is from the Academy of Natural Sciences and a member of the Philadelphia Historical Plants Consortium. I was on a tree walk with Doctor Hewitt last year and it was high adventure. He is entertaining and at the same time highly informative. He knows everything about anything you see. The walk will start at the entrance to the cemetery on Cheltenham Avenue. You can see more information here.

He gave a great talk last night to a crowd of about 30 at the Historical Society on the natural history of Frankford. His presentation was really a verbal picture of this area going back to before the first settlements. He uses information from the archives of the Natural History Museum to look back in time at Frankford. He knows his stuff. If you have time on Monday, stop by and wear your walking shoes.

Frankford High JROTC Happenings for April

Every year the Frankford High School Alumni selects two graduates to receive this award. This year the Alumi selected a previous graduate, who also came back to his school to contribute to his old football team. Michael Capriotti came back to Frankford High School to coach varsity football. Helping the team win two championships.

Congratulations Coach Capriotti!

On Saturday April 21, 2012, the Pioneer Battalion Raiders team competed against 10 other schools. Pioneers won third place in the 3Km Run, Land Navigation, and Rope Bridge. In our strong efforts we received 3rd place overall. Which means that we ranked third best against 11 schools in total! Congratulations to our Raiders team!
