Attention Cat Owners: “Beat the Heat” Before Spring

(Philadelphia, PA – Jan. 24, 2012) – It may be winter, but now is the time to “beat the heat” by spaying your cat in advance of her heat cycle and preventing unwanted litters before “kitten season” arrives this spring – a time when shelters traditionally see large numbers of unwanted litters being born. To help reduce the number of homeless cats, The Pennsylvania SPCA is offering a “Beat the Heat” promotion sponsored by PetSmart Charities®. During the month of February, the Pennsylvania SPCA will spay/neuter female cats for a special rate of $20.

Spaying and neutering is one of the most effective ways to reduce the homeless pet population. While some worry that their pet may be too young for this procedure, spaying and neutering is safe for kittens as young as eight to 10 weeks old. And, according to the American Veterinary Medical Association, spaying a female cat before the first heat cycle is actually beneficial, rather than waiting until after one heat cycle has occurred.

“Many people don’t know that female cats can have as many as three litters a year, and kittens can breed as young as four months old,” according to Angela Messer, director of Veterinary Services. “It’s our goal to bring female cats in before they go into heat and become pregnant. Our ‘Beat the Heat’ promotion is a fun way to educate the community and prevent unwanted litters.”

This special rate is a discount off of the organization’s normal low-cost price. Space is limited and must be scheduled in advance. Mural Arts Project Reaches Milestone

Cesar Viveros and Netanel Portier were at the Historical Society of Frankford on Sunday, the 29th, for the last group of video interviews of Frankford residents. They have now completed over forty sit down interviews with people from every area of Frankford expressing their feelings, hopes, dreams, memories, aspirations and desires of and for Frankford. They have done a fantastic job in reaching out to as many people as they could because they want our input into this project.

Cesar Viveros interviews Sophia Lewis

The interviews are source material for the artistic vision of Cesar as he begins to compile what will make up the eight murals that will line the Frankford Avenue corridor. The interviews will be edited and produced into a single video which will debut at the Historical Society on a date to be announced. The videos will also become available on a YouTube page about the same time.

We’ll be following along with the project as it moves into the actual production of the murals and hope to document the process as it moves along. Coincidentally the murals should be finished by the time we celebrate the 90 anniversary of the opening of the Frankford El this November.

It’s a good time to be in Frankford.

Frankford CDC Board Meeting 1/19/12

The annual public board meeting of the Frankford Community Development Corporation was held at Aria Health on January 19th. The meeting provides and opportunity for residents to come out to talk with the CDC about past accomplishments and future plans.

The board is presently made up of: Marie DeLany (President), Dan Lodise (Vice President), Patricia Miller (SEPTA), Terence McSherry (NET), Michael O’Brien (resident), Mike Galdi (Century 21 Realty), Herb Frayer (S&A Cleaners), Santo Caruso (Aria Health), Faye Allen (SPIN) and Fernando Torres (Mark My Flesh). In addition Tracy O’Drain is the Managing Director. Michell Feldman is Corridor Manager and Special Events Coordinator. Lisa DeMore is the Bookkeeper.

Some highlights:

Significant progress in social media and marketing – The CDC has a revamped and useful web site and is a prominent Frankford resource on Facebook.
The CDC is working closely with the Philadelphia Workforce Development Corporation to get people working.
Has recruited new business (A Cupcake Wonderland and Philly Love Bar to the Globe) to Frankford and assisted existing businesses (Avenue Shoes, Denbys, Gilberts, Just Good Scents, Quickie Mart, Simply Flawless).
Raised the profile of Frankford with some significant special events like the Second Saturday festivals.
Began work on the 4600 block of Frankford Avenue project. Impact Services under an existing contract with the city will begin work this year on those improvements.
New computer lab via PhillyRising came this month.

Dan Lodise announced at the end of the meeting that he will be stepping down as Vice President. The board has room for several more members and I believe we need more residents on the board. There were two exceptional people at the meeting who were interested in possibly joining. I hope they do. Both are business women in Frankford. Just the people we need.

Frankford, as we all know, is much more than meets the eye. One of the many special shops right here in our business district is Gilbert’s Upholstery, 4529 Frankford Avenue. They not only reupholster furniture, but have a large collection of antiques and a warehouse full of sofas, chairs, and more right behind their shop.

Though the shop is currently run by Gil Pons and his brother, Rick, their father, Gilbert Pons Sr., started the business in 1970, a year after he moved to the United States from Santiago, Cuba. Gilbert was nine years old when his family moved to Philadelphia, and he and Rick would head to their dad’s shop after school each day to learn the family trade.

Gil and Rick took over the shop in 1982, and their father officially retired in 1998. Both brothers love the upholstery business for a variety of reasons. But, most importantly, satisfying their clients is what gets them out of bed each morning. They consider their store a specialty shop, and work to ensure they return each piece to their customers’ exact taste. Gil also enjoys the challenges involved in his work: each piece has its difficulties and surprises, and he loves working with his brother to figure out how to overcome those obstacles and give their clients the best possible product. Recently, Gil and Rick have become a part of the nation-wide “green” trend. For two years they have been using sustainable materials and practices, and they are even a distribution point for GRID Magazine, Philadelphia’s premier magazine dedicated to issues surrounding environmental sustainability.
