PSA1 Meeting in February Finds No Complaints

The good news at the PSA1 meeting on February 20th was that there was no news.  Only one resident from the 5000 block of Griscom attended and that was to report that things have greatly improved on that block.

There were no residents from the area of Foulkrod near Frankford. The folks from the 4700 block of Griscom did not attend due to confusion about the date.  They reported later that the block continues harbor the same drug sales as have been present for the last year.  The noise and disorder has improved but drugs continue to be a major concern.

The current policing strategies seem to be making a difference in some areas on the streets of Frankford.  The next PSA1 meeting is scheduled for March 20th at 7PM at Aria Hospital.

Change Comes to PSA1

Lt. Tony Burton

Recent changes in police staffing brought a new captain to the 15th district and a new Lt. to PSA1. Captain John McCloskey moved from the 35th district to take over from Captain Frank Bachmayer.  Lt. Tony Burton was recently promoted and will take over PSA1 from Lt. Derrick Wood.

Lt. Burton attended the PSA1 meeting on the 27th along with officers Austin and Andrews.  There was a good turnout with about 20 residents present.

The situation on the 4700 block of Griscom is stable. Drugs continue to be present but violence has declined.  The squatter in the house on the block continues to be an issue and plans by the owner of the property to press charges are moving forward.

The drug problem in the area of Frankford and Foulkrod continues.  When the police are present it goes indoors but when they are absent it is public and blatant.  The building behind the Sugar & Spice store on Foulkrod is a hot spot and L&I is working on that issue.  One business in that area is known to be cooperating with the drug dealers.  Residents are advised to call the police when the see drug activity to get it on the record.

The 5000 block of Griscom is quieter but there are still problems.

Lt. Burton noted that it might be productive to target a particular area for increased police presence in order to clean up that small area.  The effect would be to disrupt the drug business and see immediate improvement.  The residents at the meeting all agreed that the area of the FTC from Bridge down to Pratt is the most active and would benefit most.  The Lt. is looking into that strategy.

The next PSA1 meeting will be on December 20th at 7PM at Aria Hospital.

Haworth Street Tops the PSA1 Meeting This Month

Tenant issues on Haworth Street were a major topic of discussion at the PSA1 meeting on September 26th.  Noise, disorder and threats have been hurled at some residents. Suggestions on what to do about the issued by Lt. Wood and some of the other participants at the meeting.

Other issues discussed:

  • Lt. Wood passed out information on Operation ID from the PPD.  This program tells residents how to mark the valuables with labels supplied by the PPD.  It is a deterrent to burglary since it makes it very difficult to sell the items at the local pawn shop.
  • The 4600 block of Griscom continues to be quieter than it has been.  Drugs are still being sold but much of the other quality of life issues have improved.  The police did arrest two men in the most recent murder on the block of a young woman.
  • The 900 block of Foulkrod has been cleared of the many cars that were stored there for sale.
  • Problem with the drug sales out of the vacant building behind Sugar and Spice in the 1600 block of Foulkrod continue.  This has been discussed at previous meetings.

The next PSA1 meeting with be on October 24th at 7PM at Aria Hospital.

Big Crowd Again at PSA1 Meeting

Sgt. Al Revel

The July 18th PSA1 meeting at Aria hospital had over 20 people in the room which is a large turnout.  Sgt. Al Revel was standing in for Lt. Wood.

The problems on the 4700 block of Griscom are overflowing onto Oxford Avenue as the drug dealers walk the block with impunity.  The residents of the block feel intimidated by the presence of men with guns and you can never tell when one will come out from hiding.  It is a situation waiting to erupt.

Other issues discussed were:

  • Apparently illegal flea markets
  • Boarding houses with no license
  • The tribute to the young man who was shot at Arrott and Griscom
  • Poor police response for an incident on Mulberry Street involving a break in
  • Body on the porch in the 1100 block of Overington and 911 response
  • Poor lighting at Penn and Dyre
  • Illegal truck parking in Northwood
  • Drug traffic in the alley between Griscom and Penn on the 4800 block
  • The beat cop on Frankford Avenue – residents are pleased with the job he is doing

The next PSA1 meeting will be held on August 15th.
