Final Brushstrokes on the Mural

Cesar Viveros has been working on the final mural at St. Marks for about a month now and I met him down there as he was doing the final touch up prior to the big celebration this coming Saturday.  That will include the completion of the murals, the rain garden in Womrath park and the 4600 block corridor improvements.  It’s at 11AM at Womrath park and we’ll be there.

Below is a video of Cesar at St. Marks.  It has been an education for me watching the project evolve.  It was a continuous process that started out with actually asking the residents of Frankford what they wanted.  Cesar listened very intently to everyone and at various points I saw changes come into a mural that people had suggested. It all came from the community from those who chose to participate.

PSA1 Meeting on June 20th

The PSA1 meeting was directed by Officer Andrews as Lt. Burton was not available.  The previous announcement that Lt. Burton would be moving to another PSA has been reversed.

  • Drugs are back on the 4700 block of Griscom Street.  Time for foot patrol officers to coral them again.
  • The long time squatter at 4728 Griscom owned by the Frankford CDC has been evicted again.  The building has been sealed but its an uphill battle to keep him out of there.
  • The club on the 2nd floor at 4721 Oxford that opened for a night a few weeks ago is not licensed and L&I has not made an inspection for several years.  Councilwoman Sanchez office is working on the issue.  Neighbors do not want a night club in the neighborhood.
  • Residents on Penn Street near Harrison complain of drug sales from a house near that intersection.

The next meeting of PSA1 will be on Thursday, July 25th at 7PM at Aria Hospital.

Northwood Civic Association Meeting June 18th

There were only 10 attending the meeting on Tuesday night at St. James but there were quite a few questions and some discussion.

  • The owners of 5260 Castor Avenue have presented a new business plan for the property.  They have signatures of neighbors in the immediate area supporting their application of operate a hair salon at that address.  The Civic has decided to submit a letter of non opposition to the plan to the zoning board.
  • Simpson playground is is still falling down and there are no plans from the city to repair it.  The damage would take capital funds and the council representatives say there is no money.  The pool will open this summer with porta potties available for the swimmers and others users of the facility.  Is this the best they can do?
  • Tom McAvoy reported on the success the Townwatch has had in eliminating truck parking on residential streets in Northwood.  Captain McCloskey has been very supportive.

The next Northwood Civic Association meeting will be held on Tuesday July 16th at 7PM at St. James Lutheran Church at Castor Ave. and Pratt St.
