Engine 14

The issue is this. The city is on hard times financially has to cut mucho bucks from the budget. So at some point in the last few months there were some secret meetings and everything was listed that was cutable. At that point, somebody decided to cut Engine 14. We don’t know why the cut ours rather than the engines in Chestnut Hill or Old City.

The protest started at Noon and there were a ton of people.

Overington Park Tree Planting

The rain was really coming down at 9:30 yesterday morning but Diane said rain or shine and she means business so I waited till the last minute and by 9:55 it was letting up.  Trees for Overington Park were waiting to be planted and I had to go.

When I got over there several people were already going to work and since I’m a better digger than thinker I took a shovel and commenced to excavate.  While I was digging the kids from the Northeast Boys and Girls Club trooped in.  The folks from the Frankford Garden Club were also in attendance and a guy from Northeast Tree Tenders really was very helpful.  Former Councilman Dan Savage also come by to help.  He rarely misses a neighborhood event like this.

Several other folks from the area came to volunteer including one nice lady from Wissinoming who remembers the park from her childhood and wanted to see it again.  Most of the trees were planted within and hour and a half and I had to go down to Fouldrod Street to get some pictures of the protest so I packed it up and took off.

The kids were still waiting for the pretzels and drinks that were promised by Councilpersons office (Maria Quiñones-Sánchez).  They were supposed to be there by 10 but I don’t think they ever arrived.

This is a link to the slideshow on Flickr of the activities.  Have a look.

Closure of Engine 14

As part of the mayor’s budget cutting action, Engine 14 at Foulkrod and Darragh is scheduled to be closed.  Ladder 15 will continue to be stationed at that fire house.  This is from Angel Cianci-Hartman,Pres. Tacony Town Watch:

Hi everyone,
Just wanted to let you know that there will be a rally at Engine 14 which is located at Foulkrod and Darrah on Saturday, November 15, 2008 at 12 noon.
The fireman, paramedics and residents of Frankford need your support.  Can you come out and help?
Unfortunately, I am not sure if you are aware of this but the fireman and paramedics are required to stay inside while in uniform.  They are not even permitted to hand out literature unless it is on their own time in street clothes for the fear of being fired.  So you will not see them outside rallying with you.  But hopefully you will want to support them anyway.  It is a matter of your public safety.
So if we cannot do it for them, who can?????
Also, just a little note regarding the mis-information of what a ladder can do.  A ladder can not, I repeat can not and will say again can not put out a fire.  It is not equipped with water.  A ladder is just that – a ladder.  They can rescue and help in other area’s on upper floors that the fireman cannot reach.  And during Christmas Santa can climb up on it to reach the roof down town.  But it cannot put fires out!  I have asked 3 Fire Engine Captains and got told the same thing.
So, please pass the word.  Because this not only affects Frankford it affects all areas surrounding it.  Because when that Engine is closed down and my Engine has to respond it leaves my neighborhood without services so it affects all of us!
You might want to put that rally on your calendar.
