Love Your Park in Frankford

Love your park day

Saturday was a beautiful day and I was out to see what what was happening down at the library for the Frankford Garden Club before Mother’s day plant sale.  Pictures are included in the slideshow below.  I also stopped over at Wilmot Park and then tracked down the folks working on the pocket park at Meadow and Tackawanna.  What a great day.

TreePhilly Yard Tree Giveaway a Success

Friday, April 27th, 2012
It went really well.  They ended up setting up in the 2nd Baptist parking lot across the street from the intended site, the Wilmot playground, because there was more room.  The Church members were really helpful.  People lined up early for their trees, and while I don’t have the exact numbers, I would say at least 2/3 of people that signed up for a tree got theirs on Wed.  People were excited, and a lot of people had checked the tree choices online and knew what they wanted!
Hasan Malik of the NE TreeTenders, Andrew Emma (PHS Tree Tenders) and students from Lincoln HS horticulture/environment program provided demonstrations on how to plant and mulch the trees- (the HS students were great) volunteers and Park staff helped people choose the best tree for their yard, and gave further advice on how to plant and care for their new trees.
All people getting a tree got some individual attention and a Wells Fargo tote bag containing info about their tree and tree care. Volunteers included members of the Frankford Garden Club,  the Frankford Parks Group (including Jason Dawkins, staff for Councilwoman Maria Q Sanchez), the Frankford CDC,  members of the 2nd Baptist Church, and the Penn State Cooperative Extension Master Gardeners.
The next TreePhilly giveaway is Saturday, April 28th, from 10am-1pm at the same location.

Overington Park Cleanup April 14th

Friday, April 20th, 2012

We had over 40 volunteers come out and help us get ready for Spring. We mulched the garden beds and young trees, swept the sidewalks on Leiper and Orthodox, pulled weeds from the stone wall around the park, did some pruning, and even watered! We got to use our new tools from Philly Rising.

James Clay joined us with 100 soft pretzels and helped out. We planted our first rose garden, thanks to a gift from a park neighbor. We picked up over 70 bags of trash and recycling. The JROTC kids from FHS came and were great as always.

The Friends of Overington Park presented certificates of appreciation to Sgt Joe Fraoili and to the FHS JROTC for their dedicated hard work in our park, and we presented them with a $100 donation in recognition of all they do to make Overington Park beautiful.

Quite a few Frankford Garden Club members did some work at Wilmot and Tackawanna and then came up to Overington to work more! Once again, we had a good time in our park leaving it better then we found it.

Frankford High JROTC

Join us on May 19th from 10 till 1 for our Spring planting, seed giveaway, and our first perennial plant sale. All the gardeners in Frankford are preparing plants for this fund raising sale. If you want plants that come back year after year, this is the sale for you! Planting advice comes free with your purchase.

Thanks again to all who support our park and help make it a lovely place for all to enjoy!  Diane Kunze, Friend of Overington Park
