Philly Play Summer Camp Starting July 7

The Philly Play initiative, led by Councilman Bobby Henon and his City Council colleagues, along with Philly Play team members received and prepared a delivery of more than $40,000 of sports equipment this week. The equipment, provided by KO Sports, is currently being sorted and will be delivered to each of the 10 Philly Play recreation centers on Monday, June 30, in preparation for the start of Philly Play summer camp, starting July 7.

“I’m tremendously grateful to KO Sports and all our partners for their support of Philly Play,” Councilman Henon said. “This equipment will go right to the kids participating in the programming. We’ve got baseballs, footballs, double dutch – all of the tools our recreation centers and campers can use to have fun and play.”

Each recreation center will receive an average of $2,500 worth of equipment, with some receiving more, based on camp and center size. The equipment will be delivered to the following recreation centers:

·         Rizzo Rink, 1101 S. Front St. – Councilman Mark Squilla (1st District)

·         Vare Recreation Center, 2600 Moore St. – Councilman Kenyatta Johnson (2nd District)

·         Christy Recreation Center, 722 S. 55th St. – Councilwoman Jannie Blackwell (3rd District)

·         Tustin Recreation Center, 5901 – 29 W. Columbia Ave. – Councilman Curtis Jones, Jr. (4th District)

·         Penrose Recreation Center 1101 W. Susquehanna Ave. – Council President Darrell Clarke (5th District)

·         Vogt Recreation Center, 6700 Cottage St. – Councilman Bobby Henon (6th District)

·         Piccoli Playground, 4300 Castor Ave. – Councilwoman Maria Quiñones Sánchez (7th District)

·         Happy Hollow Playground, 4800 Wayne Ave. – Councilwoman Cindy Bass (8th District)

·         Emanuel Recreation Center, 8500 Pickering Ave. – Councilwoman Marian Tasco (9th District)

·         Pelbano Recreation Center, 8101 Bustleton Ave.  – Councilman Brian O’Neill (10th District)

“With Philly Play summer programming about to start, this equipment is a welcome boost to the recreation centers that are part of the initiative,” said Councilwoman Cindy Bass (8th District), chair of the Committee on Parks, Recreation and Cultural Affairs. “I’m excited to get it delivered.”

Each recreation center will keep the equipment once the Philly Play summer programming concludes on August 13. Summer campers and children from across Philadelphia will be invited to participate in a citywide Philly Play Challenge Event on August 13th at Vogt Recreation Center, with approximately 2,500 kids expected to attend and compete.

Interested children ages 8-12 can still sign up for the free summer programming. To learn more about Philly Play, visit www.phillyplay.org or call 267-588-7286.
