Street Movies Coming to Frankford

Friday, August, 17 at 7:45 PM – Frankford Pause Park, 4600 block of Paul Street – If it rains will move inside the CDC building.

Street Movies! is a free screening series for audiences of all ages that tours neighborhoods around the Philadelphia region, bringing a program of independent film – fiction, animation, documentary, and youth and community produced work – from around the world to local parks, lots, playgrounds, and community spaces.  Each screening is hosted by a community organization and followed by a moderated discussion about the topics raised in the films.  It’s a great way to see films, talk about community issues and meet your neighbors.  

THEME: What do we stand for?

Films that look at our communities and how we grapple with identity in adversity.

Temple University and Displacement in North Philadelphia

Did you know Temple University is planning to build a 35,000 seat stadium in the heart of North Philadelphia? In this segment, we explore the potential impact of this project and the response of community members and organizers.

Nine seniors at New Media Technology Charter School in Philadelphia use DNA testing to trace their African ancestry and rethink their identity.

Black 14  dir. Darius Clark Monroe (USA, 2018, Documentary, 14:00 min)

Black 14 is an archival social study examining white pathology and cognitive dissonance via media coverage of a 1969 racial protest at the University of Wyoming.

2nd Annual Frankford High School 5K

Coming up on September 29th at Frankford High.

Bib pick-up will open at 7:30 AM and will run until 8:15 AM. Runners will also receive race t-shirts!• Bib pick-up is at 5000 Oxford Ave., in front of Frankford HS.• Race bibs do NOT have chip timing devices! Please ensure that if you want to time your run, you charge and bring your Garmin or Fitbit, or utilize whatever app you use on your cell phone.

After the race concludes, there will be a brief award ceremony. The top 3 male and female finishers will receive 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place medals! Runners are welcome to enjoy their food and mingle with fellow runners, students, and community members!

Simpson Recreation Center News Notes

Hello, everyone, the Summer is almost over and we are gearing up for our Fall programs.

But before Summer ends there are a few things:

  • Simpson Recreation Center new phone number is 215-537-3223.
  • Apply to be a Lifeguard for 2019 – Lifeguard courses are being offered at 2 locations Kendrick Recreation Center 5822 Ridge Avenue, Philadelphia, Pa 19128 and Kelly Pool 4231 Lansdowne Dr., Philadelphia, Pa 19131.  Monday, August 13th-Friday August 17th, from 9:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m.
  • Simpson has only 3 slots available for our After School Program, we start August 30, 2018.
  • Martial Arts Program returns Friday, September 7, 2018 ages 6 and older Register today.
  • Arts & Crafts returns this September registration is open NOW!
  • Chess Club returns Wednesday, September 12, 2018, space is limited.
  • Family Bingo returns monthly starting Thursday, October 4, 2018.
  • Puzzles Club returns Monday, September 17, 2018.

To register for any program at Simpson Recreation Center stop by Monday-Friday between 3:00 p.m. and 8:00 p.m.
