Homicide in Frankford July 12th

We had the 4th homicide of the year in Frankford on July 12th at 10:39 AM on the 4800 block of Hawthorne Street.

A woman has been arrested in the incident.  See the video from 6ABC below.

The 3 previous homicides were: May 7th on the 1500 block of Arrott; May 14th at Adams and Wingohocking; and June 18th on the 2200 block of Margaret.

Shootings are an ongoing problem.  More about that next week.

Frankford Y Building Headed for Sheriff Sale

A legal notice was served to the New Frankford Community Y at 4704 Leiper Street that the building will be sold at Sheriff Sale for unpaid Taxes as well as other lien amounts.

Past due taxes from 2017 total $23,776.61  including penalty and interest.  Although Real Estate owned by a non-profit is usually exempt from taxation, if it remains vacant for a period of time it can revert to nonexempt status, thereby accumulating taxes due.

In 2013 the building was due to be sold in a foreclosure by the Beneficial Bank but was saved at the last minute by the work of local resident Frank Bennett.  Read about that at this link.

The New Frankford Community Y is also known as the Garsed Bromley Mansion and it was placed on the Philadelphia Register of Historic Places in July of 2016.  We covered that story at this link.

This building is a valuable asset to the community and should be returned to some useful service.

1376 Ruan Sliding Down the Hill

We’ve noticed the deterioration of the 1300 block of Ruan Street for a while now.

Before the deterioration began

It’s not a social issue, the block is literally falling apart.

It’s been on L&I radar since February but so far fencing and barricades are the only progress in stabilizing the area.

The Sidewalk is gone and the building up at the corner on Penn is showing some stress cracks.

Before the deterioration began

No telling, where this will all end. Keep your kids away from there and watch out below.

Open House at the Peter Bressi Senior Center

The Peter Bressi Senior Center, 4744 Frankford Avenue is welcoming new members! Anyone over the age of 60 is most welcome. I visited there on Friday afternoon and found that there’s much happening there!

Jim Crawford is the Director and Blair Jordan is the Program Coordinator. Blair invited me to come over to hear about some of what they’re planning. Kathleen B. is one of the seniors who has stepped up to get involved in planning, too!

Janet Emily Bernstein, President, The Frankford Garden Club was there giving them advice on beautifying their outside patio space which is quite spacious. Staff wanted to involve members in choosing and planting seeds and plants, then caring for them, too! It’s really a nice space. There is a parking lot that you enter on Griscom Street.

In talking with Jim, he told me that their Center has a greater number of “younger” seniors and many are men. A free lunch is available daily. The facility is great.

But don’t take this just from me. This Friday, May 25, there is an Open House beginning at 10:00 AM with prizes, games and food. So, kick off your holiday weekend with a visit to get the “scoop” about a “hangout” for folks our age!
