Overington Love Your Park Day

The weather was sunny and beautiful during our Love Your Park event this past Saturday May 14th.  We held our Perennial plant sale and topped our previous  years sales total.

Our Friends donated over 150 plants. Master gardeners were on hand to give information about the plants that were available for sale, or to answer any garden questions.

Parks and Recreation, Garden Wagon, came with an interactive display of plant material, fun engaging games, and a smile to brighten any day.

We planted 6 crates of Cannas around the park, mulched tree pits, and flower beds.

Our thanks goes out to everyone who supported Overington Park this weekend by lending a hand or buying a plant. As always Frankford Garden Club, Frankford High School’s JR ROTC, neighbors, State Representative Jason Dawkins, Councilwoman Maria Quinones Sanchez, Parks and Recreation, Fairmount Park Conservancy, and FOOP members constant support is what makes great things happen in Overington Park. Thanks!

Overington Park Cleanup a Success Next Up Annual Perennial Plant Sale

We had a terrific turn out in Overington park last Saturday, April 16th, especially since it had been cancelled the previous Saturday due to weather. 41 people came out to lend a hand getting our park in shape for Spring.

At first we only had 6 people and we had no idea how we would get to all the tasks we had laid out for the day. Slowly the park filled with helping hands and everything on our list was ticked off.  New neighbors came out and worked their butts off.  They talked about how beautiful our park has become and how they wanted to chip in and keep it sparkling.

As always, the JR ROTC from Frankford High School came out in force and did a great job. Overington Park is a success due to the hard work the community puts in to make it shine. We leave these days tired but happy to have spent time in our neighborhood making it a better place for everyone. Thank you to everyone for all your hard work and support. We can’t do it without you!

Please join us on Saturday May 14th from 10 till 1 for our annual perennial plant sale and park planting. If you have any perennials you want to donate to our fund raising sale, let us know on facebook @Friends of Overington Park. Thanks again! See you on May 14th.

Love Your Park in Overington Park

Love Your Park day in Overington Park was a big success! Last Saturday November 14 from 10 till 1 we came out to take care of our park and get it ready for winter. 28 people came out to lend a hand keeping Overington Park beautiful. We planted a Yellowwood tree, now called Greg’s tree after one of our volunteers that’s been coming out to work in our park for years. We lifted 7 crates of tropical Cannas bulbs to be stored for the winter in members homes. 60 brown bags of organic material were removed and taken to be composted for next year. 10 bags of trash were picked up. Daffodils and crocus were planted for Spring color around our shed and our new tree. The sidewalk along Leiper St. was cleaned up to make walking around our park a positive experience. We managed to accomplish everything on our to do list. It was a cool day that keep us from sweating but not from working hard to improve Overington Park.

The lions share of our help came from the great students from Frankford High School’s JR ROTC program. Our frantic call to Sargent Joe that we had few volunteers sent him scrambling to collect his charges and bring them to Overington Park. We couldn’t have done it without them! A few new neighbors, Franklin and Joy, came out and worked hard all day to make our park shine. As always the Friends of Overington Park put on their winter coats, rolled up their sleeves and worked their buts off!

Our refreshments were made possible from funds supplied by our councilwoman, Maria D. Quinones Sanchez, and the word was spread thanks to the printing help from our State Representative Jason Dawkins. Our thanks also goes out to the Fairmount Park Conservancy and Parks and Recreation for the constant support they give to our Friends group.

All in all it was a very good day in Overington Park. Our park is ready to face Winter and come out blooming in Spring!
