Historical Society of Frankford Fund Raiser This Sunday

There is an Historical Society of Frankford Fundraiser Field Trip to the Moland House this Sunday (August 30th).  Our guide will be Nancy Crowther, who presented the program at the Society in June.  She is a descendant from the family that owned one of Frankford’s last inns – the Seven Stars Hotel located at Frankford Avenue and Oxford Pike that served as a watering hole for both humans and animals.

Nancy is a Moland House Docent/Guide as well as a member of the Bucks County Chapter Daughters of the American Revolution.   Folks can RSVP to me cameo1200@gmail.com) if they are planning to meet at HSF at 2:00pm this Sunday to car pool – or they can meet us at the Moland House (1641 Old York Rd, Hartsville, PA 18974 – 215-918-1754) at 3:00pm.  It is about a 45 minute drive on 95 from Frankford.

From the Moland House website: The Encampment – On July 31st, 1777, the Continental Army was marching on its way from New Jersey to Philadelphia.  General Greene decided that the area around the Moland House was a good place to camp for the night.  The Army was off to Philadelphia the next day.  While camping at the “Falls of the Schuylkill” the decision was made to march to New York.  On Sunday, the 10th of August, word was received that a large British fleet had been sited off of Delaware Bay.  Again, the Continental Army was near the Moland House and decided to camp in the area.  Moland House became Washington’s Headquarters.  Waiting for more word of the fleet, the Army stayed at Moland until 3:00 am on Saturday, August 23rd.  During that stay, the Marquis de Lafayettecame to join Washington’s army, as a Major General.  Count Casimir Pulaski met Washington for the first time, at Moland.  Later, in September, Count Pulaski also joined the Army, as a General, and the U.S. Cavalry was then borne.  A Council of War was conducted on August 21st that included thirteen men of note from the history of our nation.  Every year, during the time of the Neshaminy encampment, theWarwick Township Historical Society conducts a reenactment that includes the Pennsylvania 5th and many artisans demonstrating life in Colonial times, to the attending public.

Magna Carta 800th Birthday Celebration

Historical Society of Frankford

P.O. Box 4588

Philadelphia, PA  19124

The Historical Society of Frankford invites you to our celebration of Magna Carta’s 800th birthday:

 May 12, 2015

7:30 p.m.

1507 Orthodox Street

Philadelphia, PA  19124

Parking is easy, on Orthodox Street and in the Friends Meeting lot across the street.  The Arrott Street Terminal/Margaret-Orthodox stop of the el is a 3 block walk from us.

Our speaker is Jay H. Ginsburg, Esquire.

There will be refreshments after the program, and tours of our special collections will be offered.

In 13th century England, a bunch of autocratic warlords became irritable about the rule of England’s worst king ever, so they sent a gaggle of serfs and peasants onto the field at Runnemede to slaughter another gaggle of serfs and peasants assembled by Bad King John.

The warlord contingent routed the royal contingent, so the warlords had the opportunity to write the terms of peace.  They had various levels of literacy, a variety of motives, and little reason to trust each other, so they convened a brain trust headed by one Stephen Langton, and that is how the most important document in the evolution of government by the people came to be drawn up by committee.  Magna Carta protects the rights of “peers”, which at the time meant warlords, but, thru the magic of Anglo-American creativity, now means us.  And us doesn’t even mean just folks that you and I would be willing to have dinner with, but now embraces illegal immigrants,  mass murderers, child molesters, war criminals, and corrupt politicians.

And, because 800 years worth of brave activists have been accorded the rights of habeas corpus and jury trials, it turns out that they have had the courage to gather to demonstrate, and to demand the right to speak about political issues, practice a minority religion or no religion, the abolition of slavery, and universal suffrage.

We think that the 800th birthday of all of that is worth a song.  Please join us.

Historical Society Turns a Corner

Its been a busy time for the Historical Society of Frankford.  They mark the 110th anniversary since the founding of the society this year.  After having been without heat in the building for months at the end of last year due to the failure of their boiler, they bounced back this year with a new boiler and a list of great monthly programs and a collection of fund raisers.
