Frankford Parks Group

From Kimberly Washington, Esq. President:

Thank you to all the volunteers who participated in our cleanup on Saturday, April 2nd.  I would like to especially thank the women from the Frankford Garden Club who did all of the gardening for both of our parks and the Frankford CDC for distributing recycling bins to residents.  If you have gone by Wilmot park you will notice that the installation of the playground equipment has begun.  We will be meeting again on Saturday, April 16th for the Luv Your Park Clean-Up from 10:00am until 1:00pm. We really need more volunteers from the community to participate.

On Saturday we will be painting the basketball court in Wilmot as well as cutting the grass and removing all the trash and debris from both parks.  Hopefully we can count on the community residents to help us with this project.

Our next meeting will be on Monday, April 18th 2011 at 6:00pm at 2nd Baptist Church (1801 Meadow Street). Hope to see you all there.

EPIC Stakeholders News

From Kim Washington:

Stakeholders,

Thanks to everyone who came out and participated in the meeting last Thursday.  We had a really good turn out and a really productive conversation around starting a safe corridor program for our neighborhood.  I will be following up with town watch and our locals schools and faith based organizations to recruit volunteers and facilitate a training.  If anyone is interested or knows of folks who may be interested in volunteering 1 hr before school and 1 hr after school as a safety ambassador then please forward me their contact information.  I would like to especially thank Brittany Burwell who volunteered to be our recording secretary and Bob McGonigal who volunteered to be our director of recruitment.

Our next meeting will be on Thursday, March 31 from 5:30 – 7:30pm at Aria Frankford Hospital (4900 Frankford Avenue 2nd Floor). John Farrell the Deputy Managing Director for the City of Philadelphia will be our keynote speaker.  He will be giving a presentation on the Philly Rising program.  A representative from the Utility Emergency Services Fund will also be presenting information about their utility grant program which residents can take advantage of as a supplement to the LIHEAP grant.  Also, Renata Peralta from the Mayor’s Office of Education will give a presentation on the City’s new Graduation Coach campaign.

Aside from our guests speakers we will be discussing the strategic plan and budget for the upcoming fiscal year.  I will have some suggestions as to what we should do based on what we have done in the past but I would also like others to come with suggestions on what types of programs/events EPIC should fund.  In order for us to complete the strategic planning process we need to have a board in place to vote on the proposed events.  I will have board descriptions at the next meeting and I encourage folks to join the board.

Northeast EPIC Stakeholders Meeting

From Kim Washington:

Our next meeting will be held on, Thursday, February 24, 2011 from 5:30 – 7:30pm at Aria Hospital.  If the weather prohibits us from meeting on the 24th, then we will meet on Wednesday, March 2nd, same time and place.

As originally planned, a representative from North American Power will give a presentation on how we can avoid the increasing cost of electricity due to the PECO cap removal.  We will also discuss potentially developing a safety corridor program for Harding Middle School and Mastery Charter school.

It is imperative that we have maximum community participation in these next few meetings.  Not only will we be discussing the upcoming summit but we will also be putting together our strategic plan for fiscal year 2012.  As many of you know, the events/programs funded by EPIC are based on the strategic plan.  In order to make this plan as community oriented as possible you must attend the strategic planning meetings and provide your input.  In addition to group participation, I am looking to put together an EPIC strategic planning and budgeting board.  If you would like to join this board simply send me an email to kwashington@coraservices.org
