Veteran Family of the Month
Thomas A. McAvoy Jr. is long time resident of Frankford who grew up in Kensington and attended Ascension of Our Lord grade school and Northeast Catholic High School. He went on to graduate from Penn State and shortly after was drafted into the Army. He served from 1964 to 1966 in Washington DC. After discharge he went to work for IBM and a few years later met and fell in love with Kathleen. They settled into a house in Northwood with their two kids, Erin and Tom. Tom later worked for Arthur Anderson Consulting and the National Park service before retiring. He now spends his time volunteering as president of the Northwood Town Watch, Vice President of the Northwood Civic Association and Secretary of the Alumni Association of Northeast Catholic High School.
Daughter Erin McAvoy graduated from Masterman school and was the first graduate to receive an appointment to the Naval Academy at Annapolis. She graduated in 1993 and served in the Navy in various assignments over the next 20 years and retired with the rank of Commander. Along with stateside assignments, she served a tour in Iraq. She retired from the Navy and is now working at Yale University in New Haven, Connecticut.
Son, Thomas A. McAvoy III attended Masterman school and graduated from St. Joe’s Prep. He also received an appointment to the Naval Academy at Annapolis and graduated in 2000. He served 9 years in the Marine Corps with assignments in both Iraq and Afghanistan. He continues to serve in the reserves as a major and now lives in North Dakota working in the petroleum industry.
