Vince Miller – Player, Coach, Friend

Vince Miller’s name is just one of those that I remember from my casual glance at the sports page over the years.  However he was more:

Some of you remember Miller as the former boys’ basketball coach at Frankford. A legend, he compiled a 351-171 record over 27 seasons (1972-98). Miller led the Pioneers to consecutive Public League titles in 1988 and ’89.

But over at the barbershop, Miller was much more than a successful coach. He was a father figure to everyone who walked through the door.

Here is some of the story that I did not know.  And a bit more here.

Devon Theater for the Performing Arts

Our friends in Mayfair have managed to turn a run down porno theater into a performing arts showcase.  They deserve our support and encouragement.

Come take center stage and be part of the fun as the Devon Theater opens its doors on March 28th with the hit musical comedy, “Nunsense!”

Nunsense begins when the Little Sisters of Hoboken discover that their cook, Sister Julia, Child of God, has accidentally poisoned 52 of the sisters, and they are in dire need of funds for the burials. The sisters decide that the best way to raise the money is to put on a variety show, so they take over the school auditorium, which is currently set up for the eighth grade production of “Grease.” Here we meet Reverend Mother Regina, a former circus performer; Sister Mary Hubert, the Mistress of Novices; a streetwise nun from Brooklyn named Sister Robert Anne; Sister Mary Leo, a novice who is a wannabe ballerina; and the delightfully wacky Sister Mary Amnesia, the nun who lost her memory when a crucifix fell on her head. Featuring star turns, tap and ballet dancing, an audience quiz, and comic surprises, this show has become an international phenomenon. With more than 5000 productions worldwide, it has been translated into 21 languages.

Firefighters Protest Cuts

From the Bulletin:

Last week, a mattress fire at a Frankford area house erupted into a massive blaze because the water-equipped engine company at the closest firehouse was cut. It took an extra three minutes for another engine company to arrive. The union says without the cuts, the fire could have been more easily contained.
