Paint by Numbers

If you ever liked doing paint by numbers, you have to go to the Mural Arts Paint day Saturday August 11th, from 11 to 2.

We had the best time last Saturday. The room was well lit and cool!! You pick a spot at the gaint pannels that are ready for you to paint, a small or large area of paint by numbers. I was having summer childhood flash backs. They showed me what the section would look like when finished. I couldn’t make out what I was painting untill I stood back and it all came together. The Mural Arts group gives you all the supplies you need to get to work. The atmosphere was fun and upbeat. If you like doing paint by numbers and want to be a part of the biggest art works that were ever in Frankford, this is the place to be this coming Saturday! Don’t miss out on all the fun. Overington Park Meet and Greet a Huge Success

Well it turns out that 95 people showed up on Saturday June 9th to help us celebrate our greening success stories. The band was wonderful, the weather perfect, the food was good, and the company beyond compare.  The salsa contest was hot and heavy. There were 9 entries. While the judges sampled the contestants fretted. Finally the winners were announced, first place, Jason Dawkins, from councilwoman’s  Quinones Sanchez office, second place was Marilyn Funk, and third place was Nona Bloom. Everyone had some laughs and a good time. A fierce competition is developing for next year.
I’d like to thank everyone who pitched in to make the day a big success, PHS, FHS Junior ROTC, Americorp, Epic Stakeholders, Senators Tartaglione and Payton, Councilwoman Maria Quinones Sanchez, Frankford Garden Club members, FOOP members and the Frankford community.  Like most things that turn out well, it takes a lot of dedicated hard work to pull it off, and our group really shined on this day.

Thank you for coming out to Overington park and kicking off Summer 2012!  Hope to see you in the park, Diane Kunze, President, Friends of Overington Park

Love Your Park Day in Overington Park a Big Success

We raised money for park events by selling donated perennials plants from Frankford gardeners. Sending out the greening wave through the neighborhood. The benefits should be coming up in gardens around Frankford for years to come. We planted donated annuals from PHS in beds around the park. Tropical Cannas bulbs were planted (the big red ones) in beds with sunflower seeds.

As summer moves on the giants will emerge out of our flower beds. Frankford Garden Club members, Frankford High JR ROTC, FOOP (Friends of Overington Park) members, families and neighbors came out to help sell plants and plant park flower beds. The beauty of all this hard work can be seen in the flower beds and the fellowship of a community pulling together for the good of everyone. Thanks to all who came out to to lend a hand in one way or another. Your caring and help are what makes Overington Park a special place for all to share and enjoy!

Don’t forget our next event on June 9th from 11 to 3. Our Second Annual Frankford Greening Meet and Greet. All who plant and grow in Frankford are invited to join us for live music, a salsa dip contest, pot luck picnic, and sharing our Frankford greening success stories! Hope to see you there, Diane Kunze president Friends of Overington Park

Overington Park Cleanup April 14th

We had over 40 volunteers come out and help us get ready for Spring. We mulched the garden beds and young trees, swept the sidewalks on Leiper and Orthodox, pulled weeds from the stone wall around the park, did some pruning, and even watered! We got to use our new tools from Philly Rising.

James Clay joined us with 100 soft pretzels and helped out. We planted our first rose garden, thanks to a gift from a park neighbor. We picked up over 70 bags of trash and recycling. The JROTC kids from FHS came and were great as always.

The Friends of Overington Park presented certificates of appreciation to Sgt Joe Fraoili and to the FHS JROTC for their dedicated hard work in our park, and we presented them with a $100 donation in recognition of all they do to make Overington Park beautiful.

Quite a few Frankford Garden Club members did some work at Wilmot and Tackawanna and then came up to Overington to work more! Once again, we had a good time in our park leaving it better then we found it.

Frankford High JROTC

Join us on May 19th from 10 till 1 for our Spring planting, seed giveaway, and our first perennial plant sale. All the gardeners in Frankford are preparing plants for this fund raising sale. If you want plants that come back year after year, this is the sale for you! Planting advice comes free with your purchase.

Thanks again to all who support our park and help make it a lovely place for all to enjoy!  Diane Kunze, Friend of Overington Park
