Homicide last night at Church and Penn Streets

Philly.com via Everyblock reports a shooting happened at 11:50, either AM or PM on the 1500 block of Church Street at Penn.  The nugget reports AM but it’s 11:47 AM right now and I don’t think they’re predicting the future.  I’m guessing 11:50 PM last night since the same piece says the victim was pronounced dead a short time later at 12:44 AM.

Why Is No One Dying In Frankford?

According to the PPD crime map, over the last 30 days(10/16/09 to 11/15/09), there have been 6 homicides in Northeast Philadelphia.  2 in the 7th district, 2 in the second, and with last night’s news of a shooting in Holmseburg(reported as Mayfair), and previous homicide in Tacony, 2 in the 15th district.

I actually started this post preparing to take a shot at the rest of the Northeast who always looks down on Frankford.  But now I’m just really curious.  Has it been better policing with existing resources?  Has it just been luck?  Has Frankford actually gotten better?  We are down by at least 50% of last years total if I recall correctly.

Police Identify Irish Kitchen Shooting Victim As Aggressor

Buried in Philly.com:

Philadelphia police have determined that a patron at a Frankford bar justifiably shot two other patrons, including one fatally, during an exchange of gunfire early Friday.

A quarrel broke out shortly after 1 a.m. at the Irish Kitchen, 1257 Pratt St., according to Officer Jillian Russell, a police spokeswoman. During the altercation, a 25-year-old man allegedly pulled out a handgun and shot a 29-year-old man in the right thigh. Police identified the gunman as Dallas Custalow, of the 1300 block of Anchor St.

The 29-year-old victim pulled out a gun, which he was licensed to carry, and returned fire, striking Custalow once in the abdomen. Custalow was pronounced dead at Temple University Hospital just before 1:30 a.m.

The 29-year-old was treated at Hahnemann University Hospital and released.

A third man was also wounded in the shootout. The 20-year-old was struck in the head and taken to Albert Einstein Medical Center, where he was listed in critical condition. His role in the dispute was not identified.

Police have not released the identities of two of the wounded men.

No criminal charges have been filed.
