Residents Say Its Getting Ugly Out There

Residents from three blocks in Frankford attended the PSA1 meeting on October 24th to ask for help in dealing with the problems.

The bad news: The drug dealing on the 4700 block of Griscom in becoming a problem again.  The 1500 block of Foulkrod is a circus after dark.  Neighbors on some parts of the 5000 block of Griscom are feeling intimidated by neighboring resident drug users.  The drug house on Foulkrod Street behind the Sugar and Spice store continues to be an after hours drug supermarket.

The good news: A lot of people were at the meeting to get help for their issues.  Residents from Haworth Street who attended last month’s meeting, did not attend this month so we hope things have stabilized over there.

Lt. Wood took notes while Officers Andrew and Austin offered their insights.  Officer Austin the the “Beat Cop” on Frankford Avenue.

Lt. Wood closed the meeting with burglary prevention tips.  The next meeting of PSA1 will be on November 27th at 7PM at Aria Hospital.  If you have crime or even quality of life issues, attend these meetings.

Quality of Life at the PSA1 Meeting

It was election day Tuesday so attendance was off at the PSA1 meeting at Aria Health.  Sargent Al Ravel was filling in for Lt. Derrick Wood and spoke on the Quality of Life issues.  He also noted that

Sgt. Al Revel

the police are continuing the investigation into the problems at Foulkrod Street and Frankford Avenue.  Progress has been made but it remains a top priority of the PSA1.

So what kind of issue should you bring to the PSA meeting?  The kind of thing that is not an emergency at the minute but is an ongoing problem that the police should know about.  I noticed one reader posted on SeeClickFix a problem he was having with drugs being sold on his block.  Chances are when you call 911 and a car comes out the drug folks will have taken off.  If you bring that information to the PSA the Lt.  will be able to tackle it in a more systematic way.

The next meeting for PSA1 is scheduled for May 22nd at Aria Health at 7PM.  PSA1 services Frankford South of Bridge Street.

The next meeting for PSA2 is scheduled for May 17th at the Wissinoming Recreation Center (CHELTENHAM & HAWTHORNE) at 7PM.  PSA2 serves Frankford North of Bridge Street.

PSA1 Meeting 1/18/2012

Lt. Derrick Wood

It was a good meeting on Wednesday night with the first appearance of Lt. Derrick Wood who took over from Lt. Casselli last month.  It was Lt. Wood’s first PSA meeting, so time was spent in getting to know those in attendance and their problems.

The issue of drug sales at Foulkrod Street and Frankford Avenue has been an ongoing concern.  The problem of a crack house on Foulkrod just off the Avenue was also addressed.  It has come up at previous meetings and has been investigated by Officer Heather Andrews with L&I who says that they cannot do anything about it because it is occupied. There is an abundance of synthetic marijuana being sold in stores along Frankford Avenue.  It’s not clear whether this stuff is legal or not.

The next PSA1 meeting date will be announced pending a decision on whether it can  be combined with one of the other civic meetings.  That would give more citizens the opportunity to meet the police in person.

PSA1 Meeting 11/22/2011

Lt. Casselli

There were only a few people at the PSA meeting last night but it was productive nonetheless.  Lt. Casselli and Officer Andrews presided and gave some updates on recent events.

The proposal to combine the PSA meeting with the EPIC or Civic is complicated by the fact that Lt. wants to attend and his shift schedule does not always allow an evening meeting time.  It was agreed though that it would be good to experiment with it when the schedule allows since it would provide more residents the opportunity to meet and talk to him.

Complaints about the ad hoc flea market on Torresdale Avenue causing traffic problems continue.

Officer Andrews has been working with the owners of Elrans bar.  The owner has been cooperative and is working with the police in making some management changes that would make the bar safe and more neighborhood friendly establishment.  Lt. Casselli pointed out though that ongoing resident participation is crucial.  The residents who came out to the meeting about Elrans two months ago are now absent.  The police will never be able to be everywhere.  Resident participation is needed.

A tip passed to the police at the last meeting lead to arrests of three individuals at the house on the corner of Foulkrod and Leiper Streets for drug activity.

The next PSA1 meeting is scheduled for December 21st at Aria Health, Frankford.
