News From Simpson Recreation Center

The staff would like to thank you for a wonderful summer.  While the pool has closed we are now working on securing staff for the 2019 pool season.  The City of Philadelphia offers a number of opportunities for people wanting to be a lifeguard during the winter months if you are interested contact the Philadelphia Parks & Recreation Aquatics department.   

  • Family Bingo will be canceled for the month of September.  See you October 3, 2018, please note that the day for bingo has changed from Thursday to Wednesday at 6:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m.  
  • Martial Arts will begin on Friday, September 7, 2018 
    • 3-6-year-olds 6:00 p.m.
    • 7 & older 6:30 p.m.
  • Zumba takes place on Tuesdays from 6:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m.
  • Chess Club signups begin September 10, 2018.

Hello, everyone, the Summer is almost over and we are gearing up for our Fall programs.

But before Summer ends there are a few things:

  • Simpson Recreation Center new phone number is 215-537-3223.
  • Apply to be a Lifeguard for 2019 – Lifeguard courses are being offered at 2 locations Kendrick Recreation Center 5822 Ridge Avenue, Philadelphia, Pa 19128 and Kelly Pool 4231 Lansdowne Dr., Philadelphia, Pa 19131.  Monday, August 13th-Friday August 17th, from 9:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m.
  • Simpson has only 3 slots available for our After School Program, we start August 30, 2018.
  • Martial Arts Program returns Friday, September 7, 2018 ages 6 and older Register today.
  • Arts & Crafts returns this September registration is open NOW!
  • Chess Club returns Wednesday, September 12, 2018, space is limited.
  • Family Bingo returns monthly starting Thursday, October 4, 2018.
  • Puzzles Club returns Monday, September 17, 2018.

To register for any program at Simpson Recreation Center stop by Monday-Friday between 3:00 p.m. and 8:00 p.m.

Help Wanted at Simpson for 2018-19 School Year

Simpson Recreation Center is looking for an Afterschool Instructor for the 2018-19 School year.

The After-School program provides social and structural support to children and youth during non-school hours.  As the director, you will be responsible for supervision of the participants as well as management of the program.  You will work with the Recreation Center’s staff as well as members of the Parks & Recreation staff to ensure the development of the children and program.  As the director, you will carry out daily activities, ensure the safety and physical well being of the children, maintain communication with the facility supervisor, and handle afterschool paperwork.

 

Job Responsibilities:

  • Follow policies and procedures of the Philadelphia Parks & Recreation Afterschool Program.
  • Attend staff meetings
  • Meet with the Recreation facility supervisor to evaluate the children and program.
  • Respect confidentiality of all staff and participants information.
  • Attend continuing education training required by the Philadelphia Parks & Recreation Afterschool program.
  • Keep accurate records of training.
  • Keep accurate attendances as well as any other documentation need for the program.
  • Plan daily activities for the program.
  • Ensure a safe and healthy environment while completing expected task.
  • Regularly clean up materials and classroom space.
  • Support children in their emotional and physical growth.
  • Assist children in their academics and encourage literacy and math skills.

Requirements:

  • 21 years of age or older
  • A graduate of High School or G.E.D.
  • Strong organizational skills.
  • Complete background checks
  • Complete required training mandated by the Philadelphia Park & Recreation Afterschool Program.

 

In Additional:

  • Some college experiences preferred.
  • Strong organizational skills
  • Ability to multi-task and flexibility.
  • Experience working with school-age children.
  • Experience working with children from diverse backgrounds.

THE POOL IS OPENING IN JUNE AND LIFEGUARDS ARE NEEDED!  

Simpson Pool is ready – just add water and lifeguards

  • Registration is now opened for the following programs:
    • 2018 Summer Day Camp for youth ages 5-12 years old.
    • 2018-19 After School Program.  Only a few slots are available.
    • Tee Ball for kids ages 3-7 years old.  Taking place now on Tuesdays from 6:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m.
  • Simpson is looking for an After School Worker for the 2018-19 school year.  Interested people can contact Cynthia Young at 215-685-1223.
  • Martial Arts has openings interested in your child working out then join us on Fridays
    • Ages 3-6 year olds at 6:00 p.m.
    • Ages 7- and up at 6:30 p.m.
  • The Garden Club is back and looking for volunteers.  We currently meet on Tuesdays and Fridays at Simpson from 4:30 p.m. to 5:30 p.m.

  • Summer Camp Registration is now open, registration takes place Monday-Friday from 6:00 p.m.-8:30 p.m.  To hold your child’s spot a $10.00 non-refundable fee is due at Signup.
  • Tee Ball registration is taking place now.  Ages 4-7 years old.  First practice is Tuesday, April 17, 2018.  Program fee $35.00.
  • Registration for the 2018-19 After School Program begins Tuesday May 1, 2018 between 5:00 p.m. and 8:30 p.m. Monday-Friday.  To hold your child’s spot a $10.00 non-refundable fee is due at Signup.
  • Family Bingo Night is Thursday, April 5, 2018 at 6:00 p.m. cards at $0.25 each.  Prizes are awarded to winners.
  • Martial Arts Classes take place on Fridays starting at 6:00 p.m. for 3-6 year old, 6:30 p.m. for 7 and older.
  • Zumba Classes take place on Tuesdays from 6:00 p.m. – 7:00 p.m.
