Suboxone Clinic Coming to 4949 Frankford Aveenue

Across from Aria Hospital, it seems like a logical place. Read the story here in the City Paper.  I admit I didn’t know what suboxone is until I read this story.

There is talk about the lack of regulation of this type of business.

Lawmakers say that it’s time there was more transparency and community input around the opening of clinics like this, which are distributing controlled substances. Councilman Mark Squilla, who was involved in dealing with the Lower Moyamensing location, says he wants to call hearings in the fall to investigate the issue, and has been discussing it with his fellow City Council members. He thinks such clinics should be allowed only by special zoning exception, rather than by right.

Does Frankford have enough of these types of businesses?   Time to go on alert.

Northwood Civic Takes Vote on 949 Foulkrod Street

It was a packed house (about 70 in attendance) at the Northwood Civic meeting on Tuesday night, July 17th,  when the members voted unanimously to take legal action against the owner of 949 Foulkrod Street for violation of the deed restriction against multi family residences.  The board is seeking donations to the legal fund to finance the law suit.

A presentation by Harry Mearing of Neighborhood Security Patrol offers security patrol service to residents of Northwood for a monthly fee of $40 per household.  Sgt. Al Revel speaking on behalf of Captain Frank Backmayer, 15th District Commander said that the service is legal but is neither encouraged nor discouraged by the police department.  Clearly the police have reservations about the use of private security in this capacity.

There has been continued vandalism of the vacant property at 1142 Kenwyn.  Board members had secured the property last month but vandals have found a way in again.  Similar situation is developing at 5030 Oxford Avenue.

A representative from Organizing for America Pennsylvania handed out information on the new voter ID law.  (See related article from the Inquirer here).

Deacon Lamont Purnell made a presentation on his plans for the property at 4834 Penn Street.  (video here) His plan now calls for establishing a personal care boarding home for 24 residents with a variety of disabilities.  You can view some of the video here.  Discussion on the issue was thorough and the Deacon made every attempt to explain to the audience his plans. The audience was overwhelming against the use of the property as proposed.

The next meeting of the Northwood Civic Association will be held on August 21st at 7PM at St. James Lutheran Church.

947 and 949 Foulkrod Street

It was just about a year ago that an explosion and subsequent fire destroyed these houses on Foulkrod Street just below Castor Avenue.  Rebuilding is now underway.  There is some question as to exactly how they are being rebuilt though that has some residents concerned.  Do they have permits and are they being built in conformance with existing zoning requirements?

In Memory of Those Who Died on D Day

I am certain there are other Frankford men who died on D Day but these 2 come to mind.  Both attended Frankford High School.

Ralph Daniel Fischer, Jr.
Ralph was born on February 25, 1921 in Philadelphia.  When he registered for the draft in 1942, he was living with his family at 1701 Kohl Street and working at Max Willi Pfau in Langhorne.    He enlisted in the Army on September 14, 1942.  Corporal Fischer was one of the HQ Company, 3rd Battalion, 506th Parachute Infantry Regiment, 101st Airborne Division who parachuted into France on June 6, 1944.  He was killed in action at 22 years old.   His body was brought home in 1949 and was interred in Ivy Hill Cemetery.

George Lee Meadows, Jr.
George was born in Macon, George on August 14, 1920.  By 1930, his family was living at 4243 Rhawn Street in Philadelphia.  He enlisted in the Army on March 1, 1940 and rose to the rank of Tech Sergeant when he shipped out to Europe on January 18, 1944.  He was in Company A, 12th Infantry Regiment, 4th Infantry Division when he was killed in action on Utah Beach on June 6, 1944.  He was 23 years old.  His body was brought home and interred in Arlington Nation Cemetery.

Rest in peace.
