Frankford Northwood Y Proposal

Story and picture by: Chaplain Patrick, Frankford Community Ambassador
On Monday, April 15th Ms. Angenique Howard of Unique Dreams Inc. met with the Northwood community at Simpson Recreation Center to present her proposal to open a Family Therapeutic,  Recreational,  and Educational Center in the former Frankford-Northwood Y located at 4700 Leiper Street.
She stated that the 33,000 square foot facility will include wrap around mental health and wellness programs, along with recreation gym memberships.  She also said that the indoor pool would reopen for swim leagues from the local schools.
A group of area residents asked questions, some of which went unanswered, as her business plan and financials are still in the works.
The community is in a wait & see mode as there is no lease agreement with the building owner or other paperwork present.
Future meetings will be announced in time.

Balboa Catering Moving to Frankford

Frankford Welcomes Balboa Catering

Alex and Jocelyn Garfinkel are moving their business, Balboa Catering, to 4345 Orchard Street in the American Silk Building in Frankford.  The building has undergone major renovations to accommodate seating for 60, with plenty of off-street parking and is set to continue their tradition of fine dining.

Executive Chef Alex Garfinkel is a graduate of the Restaurant School at Walnut Hill and has spent the last decade honing his craft at various eateries including Le Bec Fin, Lacroix, Morimoto, and Amada.

Jocelyn Garfinkel attended the California Culinary Academy in San Francisco and worked in some of Manhattan’s best restaurants such as Tribeca Grill and Park Ave Café.  However, she realized her true calling was in food, but not cooking and now manages the front of the house in the catering operation.

In addition to their catering, Balboa has become well known for their Supper Clubs, which are pop up dinners held at various locations in the area.

To learn more about Balboa Catering, read Michael Klein’s excellent piece on Philly.com and follow this link to their web page.
