Get Ready for More Construction on the Boulevard

STREETS DEPARTMENT ANNOUNCES CONSTRUCTION TO BEGIN ON THE DIRECT BUS STOPS ALONG ROOSEVELT BOULEVARD

Streets Commissioner Carlton Williams announced today that the notice to proceed has been issued to AP Construction, Inc. for the construction of sidewalk improvements and site work related to ten (10) bus station plazas along Roosevelt Boulevard. Construction work for this project will begin on or about July 31, 2017.

The project includes the construction of local and express bus shelters and plazas, located along the Roosevelt Boulevard at five intersections: Cottman Avenue, Rhawn Street, Welsh Road, Grant Avenue, and Red Lion Road.  The work will include new curbs, improved pedestrian lighting, enhanced seating, improved information boards, and new ADA ramps at the intersections of Roosevelt Boulevard & Grant Avenue and Red Lion Road.

The amount of the construction contract is approximately $2.5M, and it is being funded through a federal grant.  First phase of construction is expected to be completed in fall 2017, and remaining work is expected to be completed in spring 2018.

The Streets Department is pleased to bring improved transit amenities to Roosevelt Boulevard.  It also thanks citizens in advance for their patience and cooperation during the upcoming construction phase.

Community Opposes Transitional Home on Leiper Street

At the Frankford NAC zoning meeting on June 13th residents voted to not support the application by the owners of 4719 Leiper Street for a Transitional Home (18) occupants in 6 units (single room residence).  It was a unanimous vote 7 to 0 to oppose.

The issues raised:

  • Nobody supported it and the block is already saturated by these so called transitional homes.
  • This property owner had no prior experience.
  • There is only one bathroom in a place where they will house 18 individuals.
  • There is no action plan in case of an emergency (Mental, or otherwise).
  • Could not guarantee that convicted criminals would not be in that building.

Frankford NAC and members of the NAC zoning board will be in attendance at the ZBA hearing to ensure that the desires of the Frankford community are expressed clearly.

4719 Leiper Street

The next Frankford NAC zoning meeting will be held on August 10th at 7 PM at Second Baptist Church, 1801 Meadow Street.
