Overington Love Your Park event May 8th

Overington Love Your Park event was a big success!
We had 47 volunteers come out and plant , weed, and mulch our park, Frankford Garden Club members, Frankford ROTC members, a group from Philly Cares, neighbors, and Friends of Overington Park (Leiper and Overington Streets). We worked from 11:30 to 3:00. We gave away 44 recycling bins along with information on signing up with Recycling Bank.
Thanks to Maria Quinones-Sanchez, our councilwoman, and her aid, Jason Dawkins. We planted 50 seed packs in the park and gave away 150 packs to our volunteers, along with seed starting instruction workshops.  We painted over 9 benches that had been covered in graffiti. We added 2 new flower beds, and planted over 20 new plants and shrubs in our beds. We cleaned the sidewalks surrounding the park of weeds. We  received a snack, soft pretzels and water, from ward leader Dan Savage, for all our hard work.
A discussion was held about future work in the park, we spoke about water being opened, lighting being upgraded, park signs, and event planning. We came together, worked hard, laughed, and felt good about making the park a better place for everyone. Thanks to all the fine people who helped make this event a big success!  We couldn’t do this without you!

Historical Society of Frankford’s Appraisal Fair

This is the Historical Society of Frankford’s Annual Fundraiser.   Bring your antiques and collectibles and have them valued by local appraiser/auctioneer Barry Slosberg.
Mr. Slosberg is certified by the Appraisal Institute, American Society of Appraisers, International Society of Appraisers, the Certified Auctioneers Institute,  and has years of experience in antiques and collectibles.

Who knows — you may have a priceless treasure just waiting to be discovered!
Cost – $8/item; maximum 3 items/person.

Historical Society of Frankford Meeting

Historical Society of Frankford (HSF) held its monthly meeting this past Tuesday on May11th.  The society’s newest exhibit offers historic aspects of food in Northeast Philadelphia, highlighting culture, preparation, storage and marketing.  Frankford Friends School students researched the history of local food sources and establishments.

Now the interesting thing to me was that the kids made models of some of the places that were on Frankford Avenue during different time periods.  You can see what they did in the short video below.

Sarah, Micah and Austin took turns reading their paper explaining their research.  The models done by the students were on display as you can see in the video.  It was interesting that one of the models was of the Jolly Post hotel.  As we sat in the hall at the HSF, we were on the land that was once the orchard of the Jolly Post.  I can picture John Adams stopping by the Jolly Post for lunch on the way to the Continental Congress in Philadelphia for a meal in the quiet of the country before arriving in bustling Philadelphia.  He could have strolled on that very ground.

The last piece of the video is of Patricia Coyne plugging the upcoming Frankford version of the Antiques Road Show.  You might consider attending if for no other reason than to see what everybody else brings for appraisal.
