Marge Tartaglione

State Senator, Tina Tartaglione, released the following press release today:

“It is with immeasurable sadness and despair that I announce the passing of my beloved mother, Margaret Tartaglione. Throughout her recent illness, she was surrounded by family and friends, and was provided with the very best medical care. Thank you all for bringing her joy and comfort. My mother was a very strong yet compassionate woman. She cared deeply about her family, her community, and her city. She was a pioneer in the political realm – the first women elected to a citywide office in Philadelphia’s history. At a time when women were rarely afforded a seat at the table, she not only earned a seat, she became an enduring leader and icon who will always be revered and remembered fondly.”

Marge Tartaglione became Chairwoman of the Philadelphia City Commissioners  during the Rizzo era and served nine, four year terms. I remember her a tough cookie but she had to be.  She was a woman who broke the glass ceiling before anybody knew it could be broken.  She was a true trail blazer and will be more than a footnote in Philadelphia history.

The Gazette sends our sincere condolences to Senator Tartaglione and her family.

Balboa Catering Moving to Frankford

Frankford Welcomes Balboa Catering

Alex and Jocelyn Garfinkel are moving their business, Balboa Catering, to 4345 Orchard Street in the American Silk Building in Frankford.  The building has undergone major renovations to accommodate seating for 60, with plenty of off-street parking and is set to continue their tradition of fine dining.

Executive Chef Alex Garfinkel is a graduate of the Restaurant School at Walnut Hill and has spent the last decade honing his craft at various eateries including Le Bec Fin, Lacroix, Morimoto, and Amada.

Jocelyn Garfinkel attended the California Culinary Academy in San Francisco and worked in some of Manhattan’s best restaurants such as Tribeca Grill and Park Ave Café.  However, she realized her true calling was in food, but not cooking and now manages the front of the house in the catering operation.

In addition to their catering, Balboa has become well known for their Supper Clubs, which are pop up dinners held at various locations in the area.

To learn more about Balboa Catering, read Michael Klein’s excellent piece on Philly.com and follow this link to their web page.

News from Simpson Recreation Center

I wanted to write to let you know that I have been transferred to another facility with the Philadelphia Parks and Recreation system and my official last day will be Friday, March 29, 2019.
It has been a pleasure serving this community and a greater pleasure being entrusted with the care of your children.  As of now, I do not know who will take my place as facility supervisor, but Patrick Reilly is remaining and I have full confidence in his ability to continue the programs of the center.
Thank you again for the support you have provided to me during my tenure here at Simpson Recreation Center.
