Frankford Civil War and Soldiers Memorial

Back on May 12th I attended the dedication of the 33 gravestones that were placed in the Circle of Honor at Frankford’s Civil War and Soldiers Memorial at Cedar Hill Cemetery.  There are 33 soldiers buried in the circle that until this year were unmarked.  Tony Matijasick spoke about the project in a previous video that you can see here.

I was not prepared to do video but the weather was so beautiful that I did end up with some shots.  Those combined with stills are included in the 6 minute video below.  It is worth a trip up to Cedar Hill to see that memorial and not how much it is need of restoration.

Quickie Mart Causes Quite a Stir at the Frankford Civic Meeting

The most recent Frankford Civic meeting on June 7th, involved the usual routine zoning issues.  The main issue on the agenda that caused a great deal of discussion was the application by the Quickie Mart for beer sales.

The Quickie Mart is located at Unity Street and Frankford Avenue and has been in business for about 12 years.  Harry Patel the owner wants to be able to sell beer.  He proposes to remodel the store and have an eat in dining area in the front of the store.  This is the floor plan proposed.  quickiemart

Community concern is that you cannot walk down the street on that part of Frankford Avenue without encountering somebody drinking or carrying a beer can.  So will the addition of the Quickie Mart beer sales make that situation worse.

The offset is that the Quickie Mart is coming to the community and trying to do the application properly.  There are other places on the Avenue who are selling take out beer in violation of liquor control laws and are not prosecuted at all.

The discussion was heated but civilized and no vote was taken by the civic board at the meeting.  You can see the video below.  It is long but informative of the issues involved.

Also discussed at the meeting was the proposed 36 person recovery house to be opened at 4834 Penn St.  That property is still under investigation.

The next meeting of the Frankford Civic Association will be held on July 5th at Aria Health at 7PM.
