August Crime Report for 15th District PSA1

Burglary was up in August.

Theft from vehicles dropped significantly.  This type of crime may be exactly what implementation of Town Watch helps to reduce.  A systematic review of studies (which weighted studies with rigorous research designs) found that neighborhood watches reduced crime by 16-26%.

The table below is a summary.  You can click on this link for a detailed report that shows where it is happening in PSA1, which includes Frankford and Bridesburg.

Frankford Town Watch Proposed by 15th District

Lt. Duane Gordon talked at the 15th District PSA1 meeting on Augut 27th about the benefits of Town Watch groups in the city as a town prevention tool.  He noted that the other areas of the 15th district have town watch groups but PSA1 is lacking.  Therefore, the police will meeting with Representative Dawkins and Kim Washington at the CDC to explore establishing one or more Town Watch groups.

What type of Town Watch to be established is yet to be determined.  They come in many varieties, ranging from folks who just look out their window to groups who do nightly patrols.  Further news will be forthcoming at the next PSA meeting and a call for volunteers will go out.

Lt. Gordon ran through the statistics for the most recent period.  As we noted in an earlier post, burglary is up significantly over past months. Keep your eyes open and report any suspicious activity to 911.

The next PSA1 meeting will be held on September 24th at 7 PM at Aria Hospital.

Thefts From Vehicles Way Up in July

Secure your cars, thefts from vehicles were way up in the 15th District PSA1 for July.

It jumped up to 42 in July which is about double what it has been.  Often this is a case of the drive leaving it unlocked for the criminal to help himself.  Other times if you leave something in view that is too tempting for the low life to resist they will just break your window and help themselves.  Click on the image below for a full size view.

crime summary july 2015-1

There was a criminal homicide and two negligent homicides in July.  I’m not sure exactly what negligent homicide is so I’ll ask at the next PSA meeting which is on August 27th at Aria Hospital at 7 PM.

You can read the entire crime report to see where the crime is happening at this link.

July PSA1 Meeting

There were some new folks at the meeting on July 23rd to talk to the police about the issues on their block.  Lt. Gordon, Captain McCloskey and Officer Jacobs were on hand to deal with their questions.  We leave the details out to protect their anonymity.

Also on hand was Andrew Jennemen, Assistant DA and head of the Public Nuisance Task Force.  He talked about how the task force works and what is required to take property of convicted drug dealers.  He also addressed the issue of the Frankford Deli, at Foulkrod and Frankford.  The proprietor has been arrested several times on drug charges and a large quantity of marijuana was seized at the store in one of those arrests.  Jennimen says that the proprietor is not the owner of the property and therefore the property cannot be taken. However, when he notified the owner, he got a call almost immediately saying that he had not been aware of the problems being caused and he would begin eviction proceedings immediately, which he did.  Eviction can take months but eventually there will be a new tenant at that location.  That was one way to handle it.

The next PSA1 meeting will be held on August 27th at 7PM at Aria Hospital.
