Frankford Junior Garden Club Visits A Cupcake Wonderland!

Yesterday afternoon, ArtsRising, the Frankford CDC, and the Frankford Neighborhood Advisory Committee teamed up to bring the Frankford Junior Garden Club to A Cupcake Wonderland‘s production space in Globe Dye Works. Learning, fun & deliciousness ensued!

Lily Fischer and Nima Etemadi showed the Junior Garden Club members their kitchen, and spoke about their career choices, passions, and hard work, as well as their experiences appearing on the Food Network’s Cupcake Wars not once, but three times.

Lily & Nima emphasized the hard work that goes in to running your own business, and that not every day or task is glamorous – but that it is important to follow your passions in life. Lily knew she wanted to bake; and not only did she take the leap of faith to start her own business, but she and Nima have put in the hard work and long days it took to make it a success.

We hope the Junior Garden Club members who participated yesterday were as inspired as we were by Lily & Nima!

We also hope that you enjoy the pictures below!

Cupcake Wonderland is in Frankford

There is a very nice story that just popped up on Philly.com about Lily Fischer and how she went from preschool teacher to cupcake entrepreneur.

The South Philadelphia woman and her friend Erin Bailey were preschool teachers at Friends Select in Center City in 2009. “I was having a stressful day, so I decided to go home and bake something,” Fischer said. The something was a batch of cupcakes, which they brought in the next day for a coworker.

Noticing the stash, the mommies bit: “Oh, my God! I want to order from you!” Fischer said, re-creating the squeals. What started off as a hobby turned into a side business, A Cupcake Wonderland.

The Frankford CDC worked with her while she was looking for a location and guided her in the direction of the Globe Dye Works.
They were picked and flown out to California to compete (for Cupcake Wars, the reality competition series).  Fischer missed her last week of classes but did graduate. But they won their episode. The $10,000 prize allowed them to go legit, setting them up with space in the entrepreneur-rich Globe Dye Works building in Port Richmond. They share a space with LoveBar, a chocolate bar.

Unfortunately, the story has the location of the Globe in the wrong part of the city.  They say where they are on their web site.    No matter where they are, congratulations to Cupcake Wonderland.

Frankford is Getting to be a Small Business Incubator

John Loftus and the Northeast Times spotlight two of our newest businesses in Frankford this week.  A Cupcake Wonderland and Love Bar are specialties that have moved into the Globe Dye Works thanks to the business development work of the Frankford CDC.

The aroma is stronger on the second floor, where Tegan Hagy and Lily Fischer make chocolate and cupcakes in the 1,000 square feet of production space they share.

Entrepreneurs Hagy and Fischer are not partners and neither is a retailer. They each have their own business. Fischer is the baker. Her business is A Cupcake Wonderland. Hagy owns Love Bar. She makes chocolate — from cocao beans to candy bars.

Read the story here, you can almost smell the aroma.

First Frankford Business & Professional Association Meeting of 2012!

The Frankford Business & Professional Association is starting off 2012 right! Not only is our membership drive off to a strong start, but our first meeting of the year was a huge success! Donna O’Brien of Beautiful Blooms Events (www.beautifulblooms.com) spoke to us about how to go about being a good business neighbor, and the best ways to grow a business based out of your home in to one featured in magazines and newspapers. She even explained why she chose to move her business from the suburbs back in to the City! And Andrea Mannino of the City’s Revenue Department broke down two new pieces of municipal business tax legislation, “Jump Start Philly” and the Green/Sanchez Business Privilege Tax Reform legislation, both of which will greatly benefit small businesses in Philadelphia and are set to take effect over the next two to three years. Our speakers embodied a mix of firsthand business expertise with practical information about City government that both the Business Association and the Frankford Community Development Corporation try to bring to Frankford’s commercial enterprises and residents.

And the Business Association’s busy 2012 is just getting started! Our next meeting will be held on April 17th from 8:30a to 10:00a at Frankford ARIA Hospital, in the 2nd Floor Conference Rooms. Retail consultant Iola Harper will be speaking, as will a representative from the City’s Health Department. We’ve got some other tricks up our sleeves as well! Join us on March 29th from 4:30p to 7:30p at Globe Dye Works for a meeting and greet – and stay tuned for future announcements and updates. We promise you won’t be disappointed by some of the speakers we’ve got booked for the year!

Interested in becoming a member of the Association? Contact Michelle Feldman at 215-743-6580 or mfeldman.fcdc@gmail.com. Our annual membership fee is only $60 – well worth the benefits of joining! Check out our website, www.frankfordbpa.org, for more info.

Donna O’Brien (Beautiful Blooms), Diane Richardson (Business Association President), Andrea Mannino (City of Philadelphia’s Revenue Department), and Jojy Varghese (Office of State Representative Tony Payton, Jr.)
