Frankford’s faithful have been “Keeping the Faith” for almost 170 years at St Joachim Church. From the time 20 believers envisioned Frankford having its own Catholic church to its role as “The Mother Church of the Northeast,” lecturer Pat Smiley will “bless” us with its history.

The Willow Grove Park of 1896,with its music pavilion, boating, picnic grove and amusements—including some legendary roller coasters—was very different from the Park of the 1950s-70s with rocket ships, aliens, a bowling alley, and “Six Gun Territory.” The Park was demolished in 1981 to make way for a Mall. WHO IS SYBILLA RIGHTON MASTERS?

Sybilla Righton Masters was the first person to get a patent in the Colonies – preparing “Tuscarora Rice” in the former Governor’s Mill. She mechanized a process that she apparently saw the neighboring Native Indians do by hand. She earned a second patent for the weaving of hats. Master Street, two blocks north of Girard Avenue, is named after this Masters family. Their vast estate stretched from the Sugar House to Temple University.

 Torben Jenk has an interest in the industrious genius of the early settlers, the social struggles demonstrating the emergence of American society, and the variety of voices which animate the neighborhoods. Participate in an introductory workshop to learn how to handle, store, and display your images. All participants will receive samples of conservation materials, a complimentary tour of the Society’s Museum, and light refreshments.

SUSAN COUVREUR has studied the science and art of photography at the MD Institute of Art, Moore College of Art, University of the Arts, and Yosemite Institute. She is a member of the American Institute for Conservation and has more than 30 years of professional experience. She is currently employed by Ursula Hobson Fine Art Framing dealing with archival procedures, paper restoration and the conservation of fine art. She is on the Board of Directors of the Historical Society of Frankford applying her expertise to the conservation of the Society’s Library and Museum collections.

Historical Society Meeting Tuesday Night

It was the annual membership night at the Historical Society of Frankford as four board members were re-elected to full 3 year terms on March 11th. Sara Brower, John Buffington, Susan Couvreur and Bruce McKenzie retained their seats.

The treasurers report presented by Bruce McKenzie, indicates that there is enough cash on hand to meet immediate needs but additional revenue is needed to make progress on making the improvements that are needed to keep the society moving forward.board members

The 2013 Activity Report was delivered by Sara Brower. It was a busy year. You can read it in detail here page 1 and page 2.

There was a spirited question and answer period as members asked questions and voiced their concerns.

hsf march 2014Members were also invited to bring their personal post card collections to share and several members had very interesting collections on display.

Patricia Coyne displayed a slide show of images from her personal collection of Frankford post cards as the members browsed through the other collections and had light refreshments.

The next meeting at the Historical Society will be on Tuesday, April 8th at 7:00 PM.  The program will be: FIGHTING FIRES IN FRANKFORD (FROM HORSES TO HORSEPOWER: PHILADELPHIA BUREAU OF FIRE 1871–1923) – Presentation by Jack Wright, Historian, Philadelphia Fire Department
