Historical Society Meets Next Wednesday November 9th

The HSF (Historical Society of Frankford) had a good meeting on October 12th with Fred Prescott’s presentation on cartography.  This month, the HSF has rescheduled to a Wednesday night, November 9th, due to Election Day.

– Jack McCarthey presents his new book Manufacturing in Philadelphia  “In the Cradle of Liberty and Industry: A History of Manufacturing in Philadelphia” which traces the City’s manufacturing base from the fabrication of hand crafted items of Colonial times through the Industrial Revolution from which Philadelphia emerged as an industrial giant to the present service based economy. The new book will be available for purchase and a book signing session will follow after the lecture.

The meeting starts at 7:30 PM at 1507 Orthodox Street.

Dr. David Hewitt, Botanist, to Appear at the Historical Society

I have to admit, I never thought I would be into botany in any serious way but David Hewitt can turn you around on that issue.  He knows Frankford and likes to walk around our open spaces to see what lies ahead.  I took two tours with him through the cemeteries and he has a way of showing you things you have been seeing but never really seen.  Well worth a trip to the HSF this month.

Historical Society of Frankford Board Election

The Historical Society of Frankford held their Board Election one month late this year on April 12th at the monthly meeting.  Jim Young, Robert Penn, Laura Hortz-Stanton and Jerry Kolankiewicz all retained their seats.

Jim Young, President, presented his annual report of accomplishments which mainly entailed upgrading systems and structural repairs and the much needed repainting of the interior.  Details at this link.

Sara Brower, Secretary, gave the activity summary for 2015.  Read the details here.

You always meet interesting people at the HSF and this month was no exception. Michael Frechette digs privies.  He is not a professional archaeologist but does it for the love of finding interesting things.  You can read about his at this link to a story done by the Star last year.  The video below was our Periscope interview done on the spot.  Frechette is talking to the HSF about making a presentation at a future meeting.

The program was topped off with a presentation by Sara Brower on Robert Matlock who was the clerk who actually wrote by hand the Declaration of Independence.  See the video below that was done on Periscope so sorry but it is unedited but complete.
