Northwood Town Watch Forced to Consider Patrols

Burglary was the topic at the Northwood Civic Association meeting on August 16th and residents were frustrated with the lack of police patrols in the neighborhood, given the increase in burglary over the past few months.

Under discussion are either bringing back the private security firm for patrolling the area or expanding the Northwood Town Watch to incorporate patrols.  Tom McAvoy, President of the Town Watch is looking for volunteers interested in patrolling. His email is nwtownwatch@hotmail.com

The next meeting of the Northwood Civic Association will be on September 20th at 7 PM at St. James Lutheran Church where nominations for Board membership will be accepted.

Active participants in the work of the Civic is needed for it to get anything done.

Frankford Civic Association Talks Bars

At the Frankford Civic Association meeting on August 4th, a bar was once again a topic of discussion.

At the June meeting, a residents raised the issue of the closed Platinum bar at 4101 Paul Street (Paul Street and Torresdale Avenue) apparently being renovated for reopening.  It was closed down a few years ago after a series of violent incidents.

A liquor application was filed on Oct. 22, 2015, and was approved for “Prior Approval Safekeeping” on July 22, 2016. That means the PLCB (Pennsylvania Liquor Control Board) has approved the transfer of the license, and the license is now in safekeeping, which means it is not in use. Once the premises are constructed, the PCLB  will inspect them. If the premises are completed as they appear on the approved plans, the PLCB can issue operational authority.  No protests were received during the protest period.  The license is held by 4101 New Additions Inc.

Also at the June meeting, a resident reported that a house that had been sealed at 1941 Ruan Street had an open window on the second floor.  A report was made to 311 on the issue.

The issue of zoning prompted a discussion where Franklin Daniel volunteered to report back on the zoning meetings of the Frankford NAC which he regularly attends.  The NAC is the official RCO for Frankford and as a result conducts votes by community members on each zoning case involving Frankford.  The residents eligible to vote are limited to those living within a 2 block radius of the address seeking a variance.  The Frankford Civic however can voice its opinion by either sending a letter or attending a Zoning Board of Adjustment meeting to express an opinion on any case that is of interest.  The information provided by Daniel will allow the Civic to decide when their opinion should be conveyed to the ZBA.

A resident of the 2000 block of Margaret Street again expressed his dismay with the conditions of the Harding Middle School property on the Northern part of its property.  The grass is up to 3 feet high and is strewn with trash.  It a breeding ground for mosquitoes and a playground for rodents.  If the Zika virus ever turns up in Frankford, look to the neglect of the Harding Middle School property as the cause.  A 311 report was made on the issue (Reference number 10879517) and will be followed up with at future Civic meetings.

The next meeting of the Frankford Civic Association will be held on September 1st at St. Mark’s church at 4442 Frankford Avenue.

Burglars Target Northwood

From Joe Kraus, President of the Northwood Civic Association:

Two houses burglarized last night on the 900 block of Herbert Street. Both homes, the residents were home sleeping; estimated time is between 11:00 PM and 3:00 AM.

These mutts walk our neighborhood and enter our homes as if they belong here. It’s high time we do something about it because the police aren’t doing it for us.

The Northwood Civic meeting is Tuesday, August 16th at 7:00 PM. Show up to discuss your ideas for our neighborhood.

Giving Hearts!

The Morgan Stanley Foundation is supported by each of the departments within Morgan Stanley. The Foundation has given Keep the Faith in Frankford much needed donations over the past two years.

Those donations go directly to helping us feed those in need through the Northeast Committee on the Homeless’ Dining with Dignity Program that operates at St. Mark’s Church. We have prepared and served over 500 people a hot meal and and have sent them home with dinner bags because of these donations.

There are very good people in our community who don’t need accolades nor do they want them. They genuinely care for others and do the right thing. Morgan Stanley does that, too! They encourage their employees to get involved in their communities and they support their efforts with matching grants and additional monies.

To our unsung hero at Morgan Stanley whose heart is in our Frankford community, thank you for all that you do! We also thank Morgan Stanley for acknowledging your efforts with their generous donations to Keep the Faith in Frankford!

Frankford Civic July Meeting

President Pete Specos returned to the Civic for the first time since his illness and lead the meeting on July 7th.

There were block party discussions about who can have them, why are some denied and that there are some having them without permits.  Some residents organize a block party and then people on the block do not move their cars.  Can they be ticketed.  There is a process but it required another permit and fee.

We need to follow up with SEPTA regarding the need for them to cooperate in keeping the area around the El stops clean.  They do it in other neighborhoods but not in Frankford.

Residents on Trenton Avenue had a block party and got cooperation from Rep. Dawkins office to paint the wall on the street that day.  Home depot donated the paint.

The next meeting of the Frankford Civic Association will be held on August 4th at 7 PM at St. Mark’s Church at 4442 Frankford Avenue.
