Frankford CDC

The Frankford CDC held a public board meeting at the Frankford Library on May 25th.  The board laid out their program of work for the next year.  It is clear that the CDC, while still hampered by the debts of the past, is dealing with those problems and has turned the corner and is looking toward the future with optimism.

This board is active and engaged and has a vision.    It was therefore somewhat disappointing that so few from the community attended this public meeting.  This is a brief listing of some of the tasks listed for the next year:

  • The CDC will continue to work on Economic & Community Development within the constraints of the current economic realities.
  • Facade Improvements to the Commercial Corridor have been ongoing with some significant progress visible on the Avenue.
  • They are using the Transit-oriented Development plan as a general blueprint for the future development.
  • They will get back into Residential Rehab when it financially responsible to do so.
  • They are going to establish a plan for Marketing Vacant Properties.
  • Work is being done on the Branding of Frankford.
  • Work with the Public Parking Authority to ease parking issues along the business strip.
  • Organizing Commercial Corridor Block Captains.
  • Producing a Frankford Businesses Brochure.
  • Establishing a Community Website.
  • Special Events will be publicized in the future.

The CDC will continue to sponsor the Northeast Philly Idol contest which is scheduled for October 16th this year.  The venue however is likely to move to the Devon Theater.  Further announcements will follow on the specifics.

Many of these tanks involve cooperation among the various groups in Frankford.  It is encouraging to see the Frankford Four working together to improve the future of the community.  Who are the Frankford Four?

Mayor Nutter Visits Frankford

At the Northeast EPIC Stakeholders meeting, at Aria Health on May 27th, Mayor Michael Nutter stopped in to say thank you.  I have a bit of his talk below.  John Loftus of the Northeast Times has a good report on the entire meeting here.  While the subject of the meeting was not the City’s budget woes, Nutter spoke at length about the budget that was passed by City Council and the 20 million dollar shortfall that he is predicting as a result.

I was a bit disappointed in his pitch but for that matter I was a bit disappointed in the entire process that unfolded so far.  It’s not that the City has done all that bad.  It could be much worse but what we are not seeing is any fundamental changes happening that will position us for the future.  It’s true we can’t tax ourselves out of this problem.  It’s also true that business can’t go on as usual.  The cost of government has to be reduced without reducing critical services.

If the City Council and the Mayor can’t get their heads together to do that, it just won’t get done and this financial crisis will just be moved down the line.  Get it done.

Northeast EPIC Community Stakeholders Meeting Update

Stakeholders,

I received a confirmation today from the Mayor’s office that he will be attending our meeting this Thursday.  As we had originally planned, the meeting with the Mayor will be held at Aria Health’s Frankford Campus, 4900 Frankford Avenue (between Wakeling and Harrison) from 5:30 – 7:30pm. I apologize for the last minute change of venue.
Please spread the word about the change of location to anyone who you think maybe attending this meeting.  If you have any questions or concerns please feel free to contact me. Curtesy of Aria Health we will be serving a stuffed beef entre with spinach and feta cheese and roasted vegetables; a salmon dish will also be provided as an alternative to the beef.  Desert will also be included.
