Veteran of the Month – Robert L. Cupit

Robert L. Cupit

Robert L. Cupit was born on March 7th 1957 in the City of Brotherly Love. Rob, as he was known, went to Clymer Elementary School, Stetson Junior High School and then West Philadelphia High School.  He also attended Penn State University and Community College.

Rob was baptized at an early age,  He enlisted in the U. S. Air Force in December of 1979 and was discharged in December of 1987.  He took his Basic Training at Lackland Air Force Base in San Antonio, Texas where he finished his tour of duty.  Rob received various awards and was promoted to the rank of Sergeant (E4).

After serving his duty, Rob was employed by Xerox Corp. Cintas and Herrs Potato Chip Company.  He then became a law court officer.

Rob was a very active type of person, involving himself in various community projects such as the Y.M.C.A., the Boys and Girls Club and is now serving at the Lloyd C. Wilson American Legion Post 224 as the Post Judge Advocate.

Rob, in his spare tie, loves playing Chess, shooting pool, basketball and TV football games. Rob has had many challenges in his life but has managed to defeat them all and move forward.  He is achieving his goals in his life.

15th District PDAC Thanks Cops for Their Service

On Saturday December 2nd, the 15th District PDAC (Police District Advisory Council) held its annual holiday meal to thank and honor the police officers of the 2nd and 15th District.   Coordinating this special event was Pete Specos, Treasurer of the 15th PDAC.

He started his day around 4 am preparing the meatballs. He loaded the truck with all the necessary food and supplies and set off to set up for this special event at the District headquarters on Levick Street.  The menu also included cooked ham, donated by Dietz & Watson. Vegetables were corn and green beans. Chickie’s & Pete’s provided all you could eat, Wings, Chicken fingers and their famous crab fries. The cake was from Four Season’s restaurant.

The event lasted long enough (about 18 hours) to allow the police officers from all the shifts to dine at this special feast.  All of the police officers who attended were very thankful and very appreciative for this meal.

Other members of the 15th PDAC that helped with the serving were Joe Valecce, President, Mike Barone, Maureen Taylor and Joe Taylor.

It was our special way of saying Thank You to all the police officers who put on the uniform every day to help protect and serve our community.

NOTHING BUT LOVE

As we journey through life, we may stumble, we may fall.

You can still give love, even if you think you have nothing to give, nothing at all.

Project Rebuild – the Northeast Frankford Boys and Girls Club

$200,000 Grant from Commonwealth of Pennsylvania to help complete the project

State Senator Christine Tartaglione and State Representative Jason Dawkins brought home the bacon when they presented a check for $200,000 to Joseph Marziello, CEO of the Boys and Girls Clubs of Philadelphia, on November 22nd.

Tartaglione and Dawkins invested a lot of time and influence to get the grant for the club.  It is ear marked for the completion of the renovations that have been underway at the club for over a year now.

The work at the club has been one of the biggest construction projects in Frankford this year and it has already made a big difference.

From Marziello’s message on the Boys and Girls Clubs web site:

After establishing the new John and Katie Ericksen Family Literacy Center at our Northeast Frankford Club in March 2017, we began renovations to create a Kids Café, STEM Learning Lab and Technology Center at the Club. The improvements are on-track to be completed In October 2017 and will allow us to provide youth at Frankford with hot, home-cooked food daily while engaging them in critical STEM programming.

… Since renovations to the Northeast Frankford Club began, youth enrollment at the Club has increased by 50 percent, with the number of teens attending Club programming doubling. 

I spoke with Marziello 2 years ago about his vision for the club.  The building was in very poor shape at that point and, yet he was optimistic that he would raise the money and get the job done.  He actually did what he said he was going to do.
