4700 Block of Griscom A Very Beautiful Block

The Philadelphia More Beautiful Committee (PMBC) announced the top four winning blocks in the 2016 PMBC Contest at its annual Clean Block Awards Banquet on November 4th at The View.

17 blocks in the Clean Block Contest were judged for efforts of block residents, cleanliness, beautification efforts, and property improvements.  The 4700 block of Griscom was the only block in Frankford participating this year and Sandra, Becky, Kenny, Mike and Javese went to work on the project in the Summer to get the block ready.  Painting, decorating and cleaning up and a lot of hard work was involved.

Although they did not win the top award, they did receive $150 for their efforts at the awards dinner at the View   Congratulations on a great job and all your efforts to make Frankford a better place to live.

Power Circle Offers a Path to the Youth of the Community

The Power Circle is a program for youth.   Every Tuesday at the Frankford Boys and Girls Club they gather at 5:30 PM for a dinner and program.  Its aimed at kids 14 to 18 but as you can see by the picture there are a lot of older folks there too.  They might be called mentors.

It was put together by Nafisah Lewis and Buddah Thomas to give the kids somewhere to go for a positive influence.

After the socializing and dinner, its introductions and a program by a guest or two.  They aim at people who have been a success to show that there is a way up.  The night I visited the guest speakers were Fee and Maleek Jackson.

This is another unique program that makes its home at the Boys and Girls Club on Kinsey Street.  All of this makes the building a real community hub in East Frankford.  Its the center of activity and there is nothing like it anywhere else in Frankford.

Northwood Civic Moves to Simpson

The Northwood Civic Association met for the first time at Simpson Recreation Center on Arrott Street on November 15th.

One discussion was the future renovation of the building at Simpson which is due for a major overhaul after several years of deteriorating conditions and a search for funding.

A resident reported concerns about apartment buildings on the 5200 block of Oxford Avenue concerning maintenance and possible drug dealing.

The conservatorship case is still ongoing with the house on the 5000 block of Oxford Avenue.  Several other properties are under consideration.

The Duplex at 5114 Castor Avenue which is zoned legally but still in violation of the Northwood deed restriction will continue unless neighbors are willing to file a civil suit against the owners.  Northwood Civic is willing to help in that effort but legally it is the local neighbors who must file suit.

Joe Krause says the Civic is still in need of some new board members.  There is work to be done and they need your time and talent.

The next meeting of the Northwood Civic Association will be held on December 20th at 7 PM at the Simpson Recreation Center, 1010 Arrott Street.
