Better Know a Frankford Business with the Frankford CDC: Bamba & Saouty

Bamba

You may have seen all the news stories by now: America has become fascinated with healthy eating, and everyone from policy makers in Washington, DC to store owners on Frankford Avenue are working to help make fresh fruits and vegetables more affordable and available. Frankford Avenue, specifically, is lucky to have a great produce store, Bamba & Saouty, to help you and your family get the fruits and vegetables you need to stay fit and healthy.

Bamba’s, located at 4603 Frankford Avenue, is one of the best kept secrets in Frankford. If you’re looking for staples like apples and bananas, or something more exotic like kiwi or mango, drop by the shop and introduce yourself. Produce isn’t all you’ll find at Bamba’s at affordable prices, either: he also carries other essentials for a healthy diet, like nuts and raisins. If he doesn’t have what you need in stock right that moment, Bamba will make sure he gets it for you – and he delivers! Stop in or call (215) 289-1825.

Bamba is also working hard to make sure his healthy fare can reach as many Frankford families as possible. In fact, he just moved his shop so that he can offer a wider variety of products to our community. This expansion helps him to continue providing an important product to the Frankford community, and we at the Frankford CDC truly enjoy working with him, and buying his produce.

Frankford Friends School Video

The kids down at Frankford Friends (Orthodox and Leiper Streets) are cranking out another great video promoting, of all things, Frankford Friends School.  As one of our premier cultural, historic and educational institutions, I think everybody should see it.  Here you go.

Northwood Civic Association Meeting 10/18/2011

Chris Wink for NEastPhilly did a great report on the Northwood Civic Meeting today so I’ll point you in that direction and hope you enjoy reading it.

The subject of the Frankford Y building at 4704 Leiper Street took up the better part of the meeting.   A suggestion was made that the Civic should petition in Orphans Court to have a receiver appointed who would then be able to take control of the property.  That action might give the community some leverage in the disposal or reuse of the building.

Nominations were opened for board members and only one person volunteered.  That does seem unfortunate and not a good sign for the future of Northwood.

Another Shooting Outside Elran’s Place

As we have previously reported, Elran’s Place at Oakland and Pratt has become the focus of its neighbors ire because of the history of rowdy

Elran's Place

behavior, violence and shootings.  It happened again last night as reported on Philly.com.

An argument is believed to be the motive in the shooting death of a 36-year-old man on the 5200 block of Oakland Street in the Frankford section, police said.

Officers responding to a 11:15 p.m. call for gunshots found the man shot multiple times in a car outside the Elrans Place bar, police said.

Medics pronounced him dead at the scene at 12:08 a.m.

How long will it be until one of these bullets come through the window of one of the neighbors while the are trying to sleep at night.  By the way things are going, not long at all.

Salvaged Stained Glass Windows

As we previously reported, thieves have been making off with the stained glass windows from the former Central United Methodist Church building (1515 Orthodox Street) at every opportunity. It is very difficult to secure a building with a huge hole in the West wall.  The pictures below were taken to document the windows and also make it possible to recover them in the future.  They are unique, one of a kind creations and no reputable antique dealer would take them in, knowing they were stolen.  The pictures were taken by a volunteer.
