Jim Eisenreich (former Phillies player) on Saturday at Great Awakenings

From Bill Rodebaugh:

I wanted to give you all a quick heads-up on an opportunity to meet a former Phillies player, Jim Eisenreich. Jim and my family have known each other for the past several years, meeting at the Phillies Phantasy Camp. In keeping in conversation with them I have learned that he has a business opportunity which he’d like to share with folks in Philadelphia.

He will be at my coffee shop, Great Awakenings,  from about 12 noon until 5 PM tomorrow, Saturday, the 15th. His plan is to both network and meet folks, especially those who are long time Phillies fans.   The coffee shop is located at 1466 E. Cheltenham Ave in NE Philly.

There will be a more formal presentation, if you will, every 90 minutes or so, beginning at noon.

Preserving Philadelphia Neighborhoods

Not many other neighborhoods have as much historic treasure as Frankford.  This conference being held by the Preservation Alliance for Greater Philadelphia is a must for any or all of the various neighborhood groups now active in Frankford.

A conference for community leaders about preserving and celebrating Philadelphia’s neighborhoods.

FRIDAY, OCTOBER 21, 2011

Neighborhood leaders– REGISTER TODAY!

Philadelphia is a city of great neighborhoods and preserving their sense of place and distinctive character is key to sustaining a healthy community or achieving successful neighborhood revitalization.

When the Preservation Alliance for Greater Philadelphia presented our first every citywide conference in the spring of 2009, the response  was positive and the event was very well received. With the interest in mind, we are very pleased to present our third citywide conference for community leaders about preserving and celebrating Philadelphia’s neighborhoods.

If you are a neighborhood/community leader, you won’t want to miss this opportunity to learn about the many resources available to strengthen and build upon the successes in your community by incorporating historic preservation into your tool kit.

Registration is only $20 per person and includes lunch.

FrankfordRising

The process of writing an action plan for PhillyRising in Frankford began last night.  Jimmie Saunders, Ade Fequa, Manny Citron and John Farrell led a group of 25 Frankforders through the process of visualizing the future.

The Subject issues were identified in previous meetings of Frankford residents as being at the top of their wish list:

  • After school activities
  • Infrastructure
  • Community health
  • Vacant lots and green space
  • Economic development

What amazed me was the qualified people who walked through the door of Denby’s last night.  Everybody seemed to be an expert at something except me, so I just took notes.

I’m kind of cautiously optimistic about this PhillyRising thing because I am tired of people making promises they don’t keep.  PhillyRising only promises to help us find out what we can do using what is already available.  There is no magic, no smoke and mirrors.  We’ll get something done if we focus and plan and make use of existing resources.

Some great ideas emerged at the meeting but it is far from final yet.  There will be another followup meeting in a few weeks.

Mural Arts Program Meeting Tonight

This is a quick reminder of our second mural planning meeting which will be taking place tomorrow, Thursday, at 6 p.m. at Denby’s Sweet Sensations, 4428 Frankford Avenue.

We had a very productive meeting last week, so I’d also like to thank everyone who made it to our first meeting, and thank again Therice for her sensational sweets.

Highlights from last week:

We did some brainstorming in groups on three concepts and then identified the ideas that were most important to everyone. Here are those most important:

Concept 1: What do you treasure in/about Frankford?

– History

– Positive Role Models

– Diversity (socioeconomics, ages, education, etc.)

– Untapped Potential

– Green Space

– Hope

Concept 2: What are the challenges that Frankford faces?

– Unemployment (may be connected: drugs, crime)

– Crime Issues

– Communication

– Restoration of strong traditions (parades, local school)

– Negative Perception

– Education

– Role Models (lack of)

Concept 3: Advice to the artist

The top two ideas that all three groups mentioned were:

– Frankford lives on the streets–walk around, meet and get to know the residents

– Work with the youth of Frankford

This week:

We will be working with some new brainstorming concepts, connected to last week’s outcomes.   Thank you so much for your dedication to your community! We really look forward to continuing our exploration with you.   hope you all can urge others to join us,

Netanel Portier (formerly Eliezer)
