Northeast EPIC Community Stakeholders Meeting Update

Stakeholders,

I received a confirmation today from the Mayor’s office that he will be attending our meeting this Thursday.  As we had originally planned, the meeting with the Mayor will be held at Aria Health’s Frankford Campus, 4900 Frankford Avenue (between Wakeling and Harrison) from 5:30 – 7:30pm. I apologize for the last minute change of venue.
Please spread the word about the change of location to anyone who you think maybe attending this meeting.  If you have any questions or concerns please feel free to contact me. Curtesy of Aria Health we will be serving a stuffed beef entre with spinach and feta cheese and roasted vegetables; a salmon dish will also be provided as an alternative to the beef.  Desert will also be included.

Patrol Sector Area 1 Community Meeting

PSA 1 community meeting was held last night at Aria Health, Frankford at 7PM.   About 30 people from Northwood, West Frankford, East Frankford and Bridesburg attended.

So what is the point of this meeting and what exactly is a PSA?  Good question.  Let me try to translate.

The Police Department has made a lot of progress in reducing the crime rate by redeploying their officers and focusing on areas and times where crime takes place.  This strategy has its limits.  There are too many bums and criminals out there compared to the number of cops available.  The most recent strategy implemented was Patrol Sector Areas which is meaningless unless you also understand that specific police officers are assigned permanently to those areas.

The cop you see driving down the street today will be back tomorrow and the next day and the next day.  You will eventually recognize them and they will get to know you and your street and your neighborhood.  They will also get to know the folks who need watching.  This is contrary to previous procedures which would have officers patrolling any where within their districts.

Now that you know the police officer driving in that car, maybe you will be encouraged to help him out.  Nobody knows what is happening on your block better than you.  You can cooperate with the police by calling 911 when you see things going on that should not be happening.  Crimes call 911.  Quality of life call 311.  Better yet, come to the PSA monthly meeting and tell Lt. Zaffino and Sgt. Rosenbaum what’s really going on.

I was impressed last night as they went around the room and asked each person what issues they had.  They both showed that they do have a very detailed knowledge of what is going on in this area.  I won’t go into specific situations but they covered the range from nuisance to to drug sales to bad neighbors to illegal parking.  None of these things are minor since quality of life issues may often lead to more serious problems later.

The bottom line is that if you want to reduce crime, the police cannot do it all alone.  Community involvement is a necessity.  They provide you an opportunity every month to sound off and talk directly to the people who do the job.  It’s up to you to take advantage of it.

The next PSA 1 meeting is scheduled for June 1st at Aria Health, Frankford.

Frankford Civic Association Meeting

The Frankford Civic met Thursday night at Aria Health (Frankford) at 7:00 PM.  The meeting called to order by Frances Clay and the minutes  from last month’s meeting were read by Brian Wisniewski.

The first item on the agenda was a zoning issue related to the property at 1845 Wakeling Street.  It is a commercial property presently zoned as residential.  It has never been a residence but now must be officially rezoned to be legal.  You can view the presentation made by Tom Citro, the expediter for the owner, at our YouTube channel.

Pete Specos went over a zoning issue regarding 4314 North Penn Street.  Owner wants to convert it to a two family dwelling.  The hearing is scheduled for next week.  The issue of 1715 Harrison Street from last months meeting was also discussed where the owner wants to convert if from a two family to three family dwelling.  The Civic issued a letter of opposition to the ZBA for that change.

Next up was Jason Dawkins of Councilwoman Sanchez office with an update on the Philadelphia Recycling Rewards program.  This program is a no brainer.  You get free stuff for your trash.  All you need to do is recycle.  The City saves money and you get something.  Recycling bins are available at Tony Payton’s (4665 Frankford Ave.) office and Tina Tartaglione’s office (Bridge and Large Streets) as well.

Jason also talked about the proposed Stakeholders/Town Hall meetings on the issue of recovery homes. The meetings may possibly be scheduled by the summer.  Some rational discussion about the recovery house issue followed.

The book he mentions (“How it works”) is available in our book store.

Mayor Nutter sent Lauren Vidas (Coordinator, External Affairs and Public Engagement at City of Philadelphia) , Dr. Don Schwartz (Health Commissioner) and Carl Williams (Deputy Streets Commissioner) to explain the budget options that have been proposed to close the 120 million dollar budget gap for fiscal year 2011.  The discussions focused on the proposed tax on sugar sweetened beverages and the trash collection tax.  They also made the point that the mayor is open to any reasonable proposal to increase revenues but at this point does not believe that further service cuts are possible or realistic.

This Saturday, park cleanups are scheduled all over Frankford.  Check the upcoming events for more information.  The next meeting of the Frankford Civic is scheduled for May 13th.  At that meeting, folks who would like to join the Civic and become a voting member may pay their annual dues of $10.00.  The Civic needs your support to continue doing the vital work that needs to be done.
