The School District of Philadelphia invites all district parents to participate in free computer classes and parent workshops this coming Saturday at University City High School. Free breakfast and childcare available. We regret to report the sudden passing of Thelma Young, board member of the Frankford Civic Association and long time Frankford activist. She was ever present at the Civic meetings, lending her wit and charm to the proceedings. It will not be the same without her.
Thelma’s arrangements are as follows:
Viewing is Friday, Nov. 19, from 9 a.m. to 10 a.m. at St. Joachim’s Church, 1500 block of Church Street in Frankford.
Mass follows at 10 a.m.
Burial will follow Mass at Fairview Cemetery , Twining Road , Willow Grove , Pa.
John Loftus reports in the Northeast Times that the unlicensed club operating out of the Art Holiday has been told it is no longer allowed to operate. Apparently it’s been going by the name Eminence Hall. We were the first to report that a shooting that happened by Womrath Park on October 15th involved the club’s patrons.
This is exactly the course of action needed to keep Frankford from sliding any further into the abyss. Many thanks to the West Frankford Town Watch for spying on this situation. And it’s great to see our civic organizations able to hold our officials accountable. But we have to keep an eye on this place in the future. Anybody seeing anything unusual should definitely let us know.
NEastPhilly has a good report on the Frankford Civic meeting last week. The proposed new trash transfer facility at Aramingo Avenue near Church St. was approved by the local civic as a construction waste facility and now has morphed into a major municipal waste facility. The impact would be major to local residents. Read all about it here.
I remember the Committee of Seventy’s last incarnation of political mapping to be in PDF format. I think they also had a politician finder where you could plug your address into the site and they’ll print out our representatives at the local, state and national level. But I just came across their updated version and it is awesome. Take a look at their Online Citizen Guide to find the politicians that represent you. The mapping technology really points out how gerymandered Frankford is. We’ll do more on that later.
