John Moore, UPenn Professor of Fine Arts Has Taken Up Space At The Dye Works

John Moore is the outgoing chair for the University of Pennsylvania’s Departmenet of Fine Arts.  I got a view of his art space when I took my first tour of the Dye Works with Chris Wink.  And let me tell you, it’s impressive, so impressive that I was too intimidated to take any photos of it.  But there is a pic of his space on the brochure for the Dye Works, it’s page 4, the top left pic.  It’s an actual artist space filled with art and such too.  Charlie Abdo told me he came to view his spot like 10 times at different times of the day to make sure the lighting was right.

I thought it was interesting that a UPenn fine arts master would come to Frankford, but on taking a look at his pieces, there’s definitely an industrial past kinda vibe.  The blog Painting Perceptions, who has a bunch of his stuff up online,  calls him “one of the leading realist painters working today.”  I haven’t actually talked to this dude, but if I do, I’ll definitely throw out an update.

Metal Work Template For Something At Silk City

We’re back  at Jason Robert’s metal shop.  This is a template he had on the floor during my visit.

I don’t really know what’s going on here, but I know eventually this idea will turn into something at Silk City.  If you look on the right of the wooden template you’ll see that curved drawing.  That’s left side of the door to the beer garden, looks neat.   So stay tuned and one day we’ll see what it looks like in 3D.

Metal Work For Silk City’s Beer Garden is Being Made In Frankford

Over the weekend I teased you about what Jason Roberts was working on over at the Dye Works.  Well the wait’s over, because….

These doors

being constructed at the Globe Dye Works inside this building

are going to set up where the gate is here:

Silk City's Chain Link Fence Where Beer Garden Gate Will Be

Anyone recognize this place?  It’s Silk City.

Silk City is so cool it’s regularly listed in Philebrity.  Take a second on all this.  It’s shocking.  It can’t be.  Yet it is.  Nothing grows in Frankford.  Nothing.  And it’s not the only example I have to show you.

You’ll have to excuse me for being a drama queen about this but this something good coming out of Frankford and I’m just trying to drill it home.  I’ll have more on the metal work already setup tomorrowish.  And I’ll have more the other stuff going on in the months to come.

Say Hello To Jason Roberts, Metal Smith And Artisan

Jason Roberts, 28, is a metal smith who has set up shop at the Globe Dye Works, it’s very first tenant, for more than a year and four months.  He’s originally from Royersford in Montgomery County, and after studying fine metal and silver smithing at Kutztown University, he plied his trade in North Carolina, Illinois and England.  What’s he do?  Apparently tons of stuff that deals with working metal into cool stuff.

Jason is the real deal, and while he’s in Frankford doing his thing, we’ll try to keep up with him and show this city what great things are coming out of Frankford these days.  Case in point, do you see what he’s standing in?  Can you take a guess what it is?  Or better yet, where it’s going to be installed.  Cause when I found out, I was pretty impressed.  You only have a few days to guess, cause I just gotta share this.  Welcome to Frankford Jason, even though you’ve been here a while.
