EPIC Stakeholders Serves Lots of Information and Dinner

The EPIC Stakeholders meeting on February 28th was stocked with a full menu of speakers and a good dinner provided by the culinary crew of 2nd Baptist Church.

On the agenda were:

  • Jennifer Selby for EPICELITE
  • Northeast Hunger Outreach – Noelle Dames from the Coalition Against Hunger
  • Child Abuse Prevention Resources – Karla Eyre (CAPE)
  • Increasing your child’s academic achievement – Marvin Dutton, Marvin’s Educational Services
  • Community Policing – Captain John McCloskey, 15th District
  • Understanding the Impact of AVI – Jason Dawkins, Office of Councilwoman Maria Quinones-Sanchez
  • NU’AMVAW – Leon Brantley
  • Veterans Services – Roslyn Campbell

Jason gave the best clearest explanation of AVI that has been made.  Captain McCloskey explained what is going on with policing strategies and how it will help make Frankford better.  Leon Brantley talked about the untold African American history of Northeast Philadelphia.  The other speakers were informative and well worth hearing.

The next meeting of the EPIC Stakeholders will be on Thursday March 28th at 5:30 PM at 2nd Baptist Church at 1801 Meadow Street.

EPIC Stakeholders Meeting 1/31/13

It was another busy night at the EPIC Stakeholders meeting on Thursday, January 31st.

Simone Smith made her first appearance for the Frankford NAC. Erica Smith from TreePhilly updated the group on this year’s tree give aways.   Julia Hilligas from the mayor’s Office of Educations talked about funding for college. Gail Anderson, from  Job Corps, Cheryl Lang from I-Lead were also on the agenda.  Laura Wagner from First Home Care talked about their program recruiting foster parents.

Coming up on  on Saturday, February 9th and Saturday February 16 is civic engagement training.  If you are interested in earning a little extra money and participating on the Philadelphia Board of Elections see the flyer at this link.

Joan Todd updated the group on the C.H.I.C.K.S. afters chool program for girls at Harding Middle School.  There will be a health forum at St. Mark’s on Saturday February 16th from 10AM to 1PM.  There will be Spoken word by Ursula Rucker, Jeanine Kayembe & Denise Forham and musical performances by Yazz The Greatest & She Is Phoenix.  For further information see the flyer at this link.

The Philadelphia Police C.H.E.E.R.S. Saturday morning program for children 8 to 17 will be starting up on March 2nd from 9AM to 1PM at St. Joachims this year.  It will run for 7 consecutive weeks and breakfast and lunch are provided.  See the flyer at this link.

The EPIC meeting is always a good program.  The next meeting will be on February 28th at 530PM at 2nd Baptist Church at 1801 Meadow Street.

Northeast EPIC Meeting 1/31/2013

Stakeholders,

Happy New Years!!!  Just a heads up, we are meeting this Thursday at Second Baptist Church which is located at 1801 Meadow Street, Phila, Pa. 19124 from 5:30 – 7:30.  Please arrive on time, we have a full agenda on Thursday and will need to begin promptly at 5:30pm.  This month’s guest speakers include our new Frankford NAC staff person, Simone Smith, Erica Smith from TreePhilly, Julia Hilligas from the mayor’s Office of Educations, Gail Anderson, from  Job Corps, Cheryl Lang from I-Lead and Laura Wagner from First Home Care.  This will also be the first opportunity to sign up for the EPIC/NAC Civic engagement training on Saturday, February 9th and Saturday February 16th.  If you are interested in earning a little extra money and participating on the Philadelphia Board of Elections please come out on Thursday evening and sign up for the trainings that will be held on Feb 9th and 16th (please find the flyer attached for more info.)

Also, if you are not aware, the Frankford NAC also has an RCO that was approved by the City Planning Commission to hold zoning hearings in the neighborhood.  The NAC’s zoning committee meets on the second Thursday of every month at Second Baptist Church (address above) from 7-8:30pm.  The next zoning meeting will be held on Thursday, Febuary 14th .  There is a flyer attached to this email, please feel free to circulate throughout the neighborhood.  If you have any questions or concerns or would like a copy of the Frankford NAC’s zoning procedures please contact myself or Simone Woods at ssmith@impactservices.org or by phone at 215 535 1093 ext. 191.

No EPIC Stakeholders Meeting Tonight

This is just a heads up.  The Northeast EPIC group is not meeting tonight.  Instead, in light of National Domestic Violence month we will be hosting three workshops at Friends Hospital on Monday, October 29th from 5:30 – 7:30pm.  Dr. Maria McColgan from St. Christopher’s Hospital will be providing a workshop about Domestic Violence and how it affects early childhood development.  Women Against Abuse will also be providing a presentation about the general affect that domestic violence has on children and  Women Organized Against Rape will be hosting a children’s workshop about the “Good Touch/Bad Touch Rule”.   Participants will receive a free catered dinner, a scented candle from JG Scents and a $50 Gift Certificate to Total Serenity Spa.  These workshops will take place at the Scattergood Building which is located on the Friends Hospital Campus at Adams and Roosevelt Boulevard.  I hope to see you there!!
