Simplicity

Sunday Poem by Alice Henry

Simplicity

Where did simplicity go?
Does anyone really Know?
It always has been a friend of mine.
Through life’s shower or shine.

As each day in body you arise,
Just wipe the sleep from your spiritual eyes
Ask yourself:
“Today which molehill will I mountainclimb”?

For like molehills, Simplicity requires much time.
Simplicity is there for the taking.
It soothes many a mind that’s aching.

Simplicity can not be bought or sold
For it’s value surpasses any gold.
Some search for it their whole life thru
Never knowing it can only be found within you.

Man has invented many time-saving devices.
Why then Man is there such a
“Simplicity crisis”?

Let’s Move It Philly Provides Information and Entertainment

There was a really great crowd Saturday, February 16th at St. Marks Let’s Move It Philly.  I stoppped by for a few minutes and took a quick tour of the health forum exhibits.  Also had time to stay for  Jeanine Kayembe (see her performance here) and a performance by four of the students from Harding middle school.

The girls, Jasmine Richardson, Janaya Alexander, Sabria Henderson and Samaya Smith-Bey attend the Carson Valley Children’s Aid C.H.I.C.K.S. program at Harding Middle School.  CHICKS stands for Creating Healthy Informed Confident Knowledgeable Selves. The program teaches the girls about the importance of building self esteem and confidence along with eating healthy, exercising daily and building good peer relationships.  See their performance here.

This was a great program by Carson Valley Children’s Aid.

Students Visit Studio of Frankford-based Visual Artist Timmy Graham

Students from Harding Middle School’s CHICKS after-school program visited Frankford-based painter Timmy Graham yesterday to learn about his craft, artistic development and career.

This visit to artist spaces is part of an on-going series facilitated by ArtsRising called Career Connections in Creativity (or C to the 3).  Youth are invited to engage with creative professionals of all stripes to learn about their careers and their journey to becoming successful.

Timmy spoke to the girls about his process of painting and artistic decision-making and how his career evolved over time.  He encouraged them to find and cultivate activities that they are passionate about and to not let anyone deter them from their goals.  He also emphasized that anything worth becoming good at starts off difficult, but perseverance is the key to success, he being a prime example of that.

The CHICKS after-school program focuses on empowering inner city adolescent females on personal development and health awareness.  It is supported by the Grassroots Foundation and facilitated by Joan Todd of Carson Valley Children’s Aid.

Additional thanks to the Frankford CDC for their assistance.

Cesar Viveros at Work

Cesar has been our Frankford muralist since 2011 and I have stopped by to see him at work.  Murals are art on a monumental scale so its not easy to portray accurately what is involved..  While I took some standard pictures of the work in progress, Maria Pouchnikova got right up there with him.  Have a look here.
