Bar Restaurant of the Week on the Tour

Brian’s Sports bar at 5007 Frankford Avenue was the subject of discussion at the Frankford Civic a few years ago but has been below the radar since that time.

The legal name is ONJY Inc. and they have only one citation on the LCB website.  They operate with a restaurant licence (R4498) and therefore are required to be primarily in the food business with seating for 30 at tables and chairs.

We haven’t sent anybody in for a test of the food service yet.

Frankford Restaurant Review – Oxford Restaurant

Contrasting with our recent tongue in cheek series of reviews of beer stores claiming to be restaurants, there really are some places to eat in Frankford and this is the first on the list.

The Oxford Restaurant opened up in the building where the Cintoli Music store was for many years at 5349 Oxford Avenue.  It has all 5 star reviews on Yelp.

It is all new inside, sparkling clean with waitress service and has a rest room for customers.  The owner and his wife greet you cordially as you come in since he is cooking right up in front.  If you ever wondered what they are doing with your order in the kitchen, you will be able to see it first hand at the Oxford.

They do a brisk business in take out but have seating at tables and also at the counter for about 35.  They are open from 630 AM till 230 PM, so its mainly a breakfast and lunch place.  Some menu items: omelettes, creamed chipped beef, home fries, grits, eggs, pancakes, waffles, hoagies, cheese steaks, salads, crab cakes, salmon steaks, burgers and more.  The coffee is good and they serve bottled drinks.  They don’t take credit but do have an ATM.

It’s well worth a trip up Oxford Avenue.  Next week we’ll be right off of Frankford Avenue on Orthodox Street at Kesha’s.

Number 5 on the Bars of Frankford Tour

This week we are making a stop at 4346 Frankford Avenue.  It is legally called Poonam Inc. but is commonly known as the Quickie Mart.  It is not a bar but is on the tour because they sell beer.

This is a bright spot on the tour because the owner of the business (Harry Patel) came to the Frankford Civic Association 2 years ago and explained why he wanted to sell beer.  He said that all those other businesses along the Avenue that were selling beer were driving down his sales.  He bought his license (E211) and invested the money in remodeling the store to meet the legal requirements.

He has an E license which means:

Eating Place Retail Dispenser (E) In order to qualify for an eating place retail dispenser license, the establishment must be a reputable place where food is regularly and customarily prepared and sold. The establishment shall have a total area of not less than 300 square feet in one or more rooms, other than living quarters, and must be equipped with tables and chairs accommodating at least 30 persons at one time.

The Quickie Mart seems to be in compliance.  He also remodeled the outside of the shopping center where the Quickie Mart is located at the same time.  He was very concerned that if he got into the beer business he did not want it to hurt the community.
