Zoning Taken Up at Frankford Civic Meeting

T&T Bar, 4691 Hawthorne Street

It was all about zoning at the Frankford Civic Association meeting on August 2nd.

4327 Penn Street – Angela Raymond operates a family child care center and has an application to increase it to a group day care center which has a maximum of 12 children.T&T Bar, 4691 Hawthorne Street

4691 Hawthorne St. – Cecilia Reyes has applied for zoning for a retail grocery store at the former location of the T&T bar (corner of Hawthorne and Margaret).  Due to the history of this location in the community, the Frankford Civic Association will hold a neighborhood meeting (date and time to be announced) on the issue before a decision is made.

4834 Penn St. – Deacon Lamont Purnell made a presentation on the plans for Innovative Treatment Alternatives Inc. (INA) to open a Veterans Shared Living environment.  His presentation was the same as we previously covered at the Northeast EPIC Stakeholders meeting.  Documentation was provided at the meeting which you can review here.  The next step is or INA to prepare floor plans for the property that will meet the zoning requirements of the 11 family building.

The next meeting of the Frankford Civic Association will be on September 6th at 7PM at Aria Hospital.

Murals Going Up in Frankford

Mural panels in progress

Saturday, August 4th, was the first public community paint day for the Frankford murals. I stopped by for some pictures and there was a steady stream of visitors coming in to try their hand at this historic project.  Meanwhile, if you have been by Womrath Park in the last, week you might have missed noticing the work begun on the first mural panels.  I was there to photograph the work on the rain garden and missed it myself.

Below is a slide show of Paint day.  It’s not too late to participate.  There will a second community paint day at 2nd Baptist Church next Saturday from 11AM till 2PM.  That is at 1801 Meadow Street.

Frankford Friends New Building is Amazing

Well they haven’t invited me in yet for a tour but the outside of Frankford Friends new school building really is interesting.  There is a beautiful sunlit vaulted open space that kind of brings the outside in.  The exterior is a warm wood material that really dresses up the block.  It is ironic that we lost one historic classic building on one side of the street and gained a modern classic building on the other.  It does look to be within a few months of opening and I will be there.

Come and Paint Your Way into History

This Saturday from 11AM till 2PM at the 2nd Baptist Church is the first community paint day for the murals that will soon rise along Frankford Avenue.  This is a public event and everyone is  invited to come out and actually do some painting on the murals.  No ladders are involved.  The mural start being painted and then are put up on the wall.  No special talent is needed.  It is almost as easy as paint by numbers.  Snacks provided.  We’ll be there to take your picture.  See below.

Construction at Womrath Park

Last week, the construction fence went up around Womrath Park.  It seems like about 3 years since I first heard that a rain garden would become a feature at Womrath.  After a few meetings, it started to make sense and along with the murals that will go up this Summer and Fall, Womrath Park will become a real gateway to Frankford.  You can read more about the plan in our previous post here.

When it is finished, the big old trees will remain but there will be some new paths and a water feature at the South end.  They have taken great pains to do no harm to those big trees by surrounding them with bright orange marker fences to keep the heavy equipment safely away.
