Mormons in Frankford

Mormon Temple Salt Lake City

At the Frankford Civic meeting on Thursday night, it was made official.  The Mormons have established a beachhead in Frankford.  Those young men knocking on your door have recruited enough members to make it necessary to establish a church in Frankford.  There are over 150 church members in the 19124 area who have been going up to the nearest Mormon church at Red Lion Road.

The Frankford church is at 4612 Frankford Avenue (map).  That is the location of the former American Pants store.  They have been working on the conversion of the facility for several months in a very low profile way that did cause some concern among the folks who were watching.  Naturally nobody wanted another drug business going up on Main Street. A sign will be going up shortly and that will help identify it prominently.

My first reaction to that news was relief.  Then I thought it could be better.  Why not some nice new business?  Fact is that the market will decide what goes into that spot and the Mormons are a fine addition to fill it until some other enterprise finds a more profitable way to use the space.  In the meantime, the Mormons will bring some life to Main Street on Sundays which is sorely lacking.

Now if they would just make it into a family history center too that would be ideal.  Welcome to Frankford Mormons.

New Frankford Community Y

As reported on 6abc.com, the New Frankford Community Y is in peril.

The community Y is self-funded but has received state grants; an anticipated grant for $200,000 didn’t come through last year.

Tobin hasn’t been able to pay his employees for about a month.

“They’ve hung in there with me which is fantastic, I mean, they’re great people,” Tobin said.

The 800 Y members, who have depended on the center’s gym facilities and only indoor pool in the area are stunned by the proposed closing.

The ripple effect of the housing collapse and economic downturn continue to hit Frankford in the form of funding cuts.

It was confirmed, at the Frankford Civic Association meeting tonight, that the Y will close on Friday.  There is some hope that another operator may be found for the facility.  Discussions with at least two interested parties have taken place but no deal is in place as yet.

Frankford Civic Association

The Northeast Times projects the agenda for the meeting of the Frankford Civic Association this Thursday.

Developer Vaughan Buckley wants to build 16 rental units at 1710 Pratt St., a few blocks from Frankford Avenue near Duffield Street. Buckley came before the civic association May 7 because he wants members’ OK for a zoning variance he needs to build on the property. The parcel currently is zoned for one structure.

Also at the June 4 session, members expect to hear more about city inspections of neighborhood drug rehabilitation facilities and recovery houses.

Sounds like another meeting that everyone will want to attend.
